Helping sister buy her first real tri bike on very limited budget. Narrowed down to Kestrel Talon Tri for about $1300 or the Specialized Transition Apex for just under $1600. Working with one of two local bike shops to ensure proper fit. Both bikes appear to be very similar. Any reason to spend the extra money on the Transition? Any feedback on either bike is appreciated.

the specialized is a real tri bike, the kestrel is a road/tri hybrid type thing. The spec is on par with the p3 aerodynamically, the kestrel is a decent bit slower. If she fits the transition, it's a no brainer for $300 imo.

x2... the specialized dimensions on the elite is very close to the SHIV, thus more triathlon specific... I'd second the specialized.

The specialized will likely also be easier to resell, and at a higher resale price.

We are often asked the question, "What size frame should I buy" and the answer is “it depends”. I know that’s not the answer you want to hear, but hopefully the following will shed some more light.

I'm doing my first tri Saturday. It starts at 7 AM and the forecast is calling for a high of 82 (air temp). Do I need to rush out and get a wetsuit?

Well I said that I was not going to do it this season, but I cracked. I broke down and bought a new bike. I went out and bought a shiny new Cannondale road bike.
