Precipitation
Total Time = 1h 00m 10s
Overall Rank = 11/162
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 2/11
Pre-race routine:

Peanut butter on toast with a bottle of water for breakfast. Due to weather delays, breakfast taco and kolache whilst waiting.

Gatorade pre-race drink 15 minutes prior to swim start
Event warmup:

Stretched out arms, legs and neck prior to race, mostly to keep warm whilst waiting.
Swim
  • 06m 47s
  • 300 meters
  • 02m 16s / 100 meters
Comments:

Pool swim, initially believed people were starting based on swim seeds before realizing that it was first come first served. Slipped into the water and overtook someone on the 3rd length, then again on the 7th and again on the 11th. Didn't get held up at any point.
What would you do differently?:

Not much would have helped things here other than more swim training run.
Transition 1
  • 01m 33s
Comments:

Not too bad, bike was racked furthest from 'swim in' therefore this reduced the distance to run in cycling shoes.
What would you do differently?:

Shoes already on bike for flying mount.
Bike
  • 27m 43s
  • 10 miles
  • 21.65 mile/hr
Comments:

Pushing hard all the way, cornering was treacherous due to standing water and loose stones / gravel at the u-turn point. No cadence or heart rate from Garmin for some reason.

Passed everyone i saw, was not over taken by any rider. Almost had an incident when shouting the obligatory on your left when two riders were riding on the left. Had to pass on the right, had no choice.

Decided upon a flying dismount around 1 mile from T2. Opened shoes around 500m from transition, slipped right foot out but had a problem trying to get foot on the empty shoe, eventually it worked. Left foot was not an issue. Stepped off bike and ran into T2.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Transition 2
  • 00m 51s
Comments:

Racked bike with front wheel on top of running shoes, slowed me down getting shoes on.
What would you do differently?:

Take care when racking bike
Run
  • 23m 14s
  • 3.2 miles
  • 07m 16s  min/mile
Comments:

Exited T2 right behind a young girl who had a great pace, kept her around 50m ahead all the way and pulled it back to 25m around 1/2 mile to go. Pushed hard, made sure to breath properly and control my pace.
What would you do differently?:

Try and push harder if possible.
Post race
Warm down:

Stretch out, drink 3 bottles of water and eat a donut.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nervousness when cornering on the bike due to the standing water and loose gravel at the U-Turn.

Event comments:

Good race, weather put a lot of people off, some left due to start delay. Race Director stuck out the weather and took the first opportunity to start the event.

Swim should have been organized by seed time rather than a free for all.

After event party was good, great hand made awards for podium finishers plus some excellent door prizes.

My first triathlon was at age 56. At first I was just the cameraman at my daughter's first triathlon, then I am doing the races that she has done.
