One of our own BTers set the course record for the Double Ironman Virginia.

28:02:42
1st place female - the new female record holder for this course. Beat the old record by 20 minutes.
2nd place overall (yes, she beat all the males except for 1)
1st place overall out of the water (fastest swim of the day)

Turns out she is also a pretty good writer too! Here race report is awesome:

OK, I'm still new to all of this so bear with me...................lemme' get this straight: after you **think** you've done the "ultimate" which is an Ironman, along comes this next event call a "DOUBLE Ironman". O - M - G !!!

Amy is one sick pup - I love it! She deserves many congrats.

I see one of the other entrants comes from my town (Hudson, Massachusetts on the I-495 Frontier which is a little less than a 1 day stagecoach ride from downtown Boston).

Yeah, such is life. There is always someone faster, smarter, richer, tougher, badder, prettier (and uglier), etc. It is very humbling to read about ultra events.....kinda keeps one's haid from getting too big. :-)

Yah, I'm noticing this..................and it's part of the fun! There's always something to work on and/or tinker with, another journey. Next there's the Triple Ironman and after that comes the "Ironman 3.142857143" which I guess means the race never ends!

Wow on the Double IronMan but holy cow does that sound like a really boring race: 12 lap swim, 45 time out and back bike and a 26 out and back run. Nothing like seeing the same scenery over and over and over again.

Congrats on the awesome accomplishment though!

Thanks for all the support and love. The comments bring tears to my eyes. I am glad everyone is enjoying reading the race report. It was a very difficult race, but an amazing experience. I will be going back for another ultra in the future. :-)

I laughed out loud at the "It felt amazing to stop biking!!!"

Fun write up... doesn't sound like a fun course with all those out and backs.

gratz.

I laughed that only time she mentioned "exhausted" was about the flight to DC and tavel to the race venue. :-)

Fair point

and still in awe and thinking about this...

what kind of peak training volume are people doing for an event like this?

Personally (I've never done anything even close to this distance so can't comment on that part) but I don't mind small loops while training. I often train on my bike at a local state park that is about 5.5 miles around. I like it because I don't have to worry about gravel, dogs chasing me or traffic. I've done some 40 mile rides out there the whole time wondering why I am not bored riding around and around in the same place but it really does not bother me. I think it's because I feel safe.

The rain and being wet is what stood out to me. Hardcore for sure. And the other participant & team being so nasty. Uncalled for! Why would you do that?

Amy, this is just an outstanding display of your mental toughness. I was blown away by the fact that you did this in the rain and that you were thinking about the crew of folks that were out there supporting you.

You’re probably not going to get it just right immediately. Like always, just do the best you can and keep on keeping on. Don’t get upset if you don’t hit the target every time.

I heard an athletic trainer say that in life we have many setbacks. The key is to overcome these setbacks, but the question is how?
