Volvo CrossCountry

I have the one with the small engine and it is very slow but if you get the T6 it moves right along.

With the back seats laid down I can get a couple bikes in and more gear than you can imagine.

All three of my dogs fit (tightly) in the back area even with the back seats "up".

Not fancy. Not sexy. It does the job with no fuss. I really like this car. Continuing to contribute to my boring image.

Sweet ride! My wife is set on a Volvo XC60 for when she is ready to give up the convertible and have kids. But I sure like the idea of a TDi getting awesome mileage. Any maintenance issues with yours yet or are they too new to really have any problems yet?

They are both too new.  no problems yet.    no worries for 3 years anyhow  with the new car warranty.     They are decent size.  practical.  Well made I believe.  And the diesel  well  those engines are not even broken in till 50K miles!!!

2005 Chevy Avalanche. I'm always towing a boat or lawn mower trailer, along with carrying stuff in the bed. As far as layout and the truck itself, I LOVE it. The saddlebags on the sides are great for holding hitch inserts, tie downs, ropes, tool kits and other necessary items, and the bed is covered and "mostly" waterproof, but the lids are easy to remove. My bike fits laying down in the bed with the covers on, so I can lock it in there, or I have a hitch mount rack if the bed is full. I can also take the wheels off and fit the bike in the back seat. Now the engine and drivetrain leave me a little underwhelmed. I bought the truck with 95K miles 3 years ago and have had the transmission rebuilt twice. Apparently the guys didn't do it right the first time and it chewed itself up again 1 year and 1 month later. The engine doesn't seem to have the get up and go that I would expect, but then again it does have 120K on it now and I try to be easy on the gas pedal somewhat. Overall I like the truck, its big, comfy and does exactly what I need it to do, I just wish the mechanical parts were more durable.
My next vehicle will most likely be a Toyota Tacoma if I sell the boat, or Tundra if I keep the boat. My mom has a Tacoma with a bed cover and that little truck is fantastic. 125K miles and never had a problem.

Hey OP, if you want to stick with a truck but want better mileage this might be a good option for you.

New Dodge Ram Eco Diesel. Supposed to get 20 around town and up to 28 hwy, they got 24 combined in this test. Pretty good numbers for a full size truck.

That SLK is nice, and from what I hear, real quick too.

We almost bought an SLK320 but decided it just wasn't going to cut it for a daily driver for my wife. I liked the hard top convertible aspect, but I didn't feel real comfortable in it and the lack of a pretend backseat to throw stuff in was the deal breaker. Ended up with the BMW for the extra space.

Mine is a 2002 with <13,000 miles on it. Supercharged V6 with 349hp. Pretty much an even match for a '02 convertible Vette.

Not a practical car at all, though the trunk is relatively huge with the top up.

Wait for the Titan with the Cummins! :^)

If Chrysler had not gone bankrupt, this truck would have a Cummins in it too. (the contract was signed, but the bankruptcy let them out of the contract)

We can only hope that the VM motor will be a dismal failure and Chrysler will come crawling back with their hat in their hands, asking for the 5.0! :^)

Right now,  I don't drive anything... this guy does:

That's Tian ShiFu (Master Tian) and he is in charge of our company car.  It's a Buick GL8 Minivan in the low-level trim with a 2.4L 4-banger that has NO GO.  He's always very envious of the higher trim-level with the 3.0 V6.  (even though we rarely go faster than 40mph)

He grew up in Beijing and has many stories to tell!   Now that my Chinese is getting better I can actually understand most of them! He speaks no English.   He is such an amazing man, he has really become a part of our family.

The look on his face was because he was marveling at the size of my new GoPro Hero.  This was on the way to the airport on a cold February morning... taking our family trip to Australia.

Hey, I am gathering that you work for Cummins or at least are affiliated in some fashion. I know that the 5.0 was designed to go in a Ram, but then they ended up going with the smaller engine made by the company Fiat owns. The speculation and explanations I have heard for this is the 5.0 did not get the economy they were looking to get out of it, also it is a bit noisier and more diesel like than they wanted.

When looking at the HP and torque numbers it appears the 5.0 is not very far behind the 5.9 in my truck, and I know I am not getting 28mpg hwy with my 5.9. Do you have any eco numbers for the 5.0? Is it anywhere near the projected numbers for the new ram eco diesel?

I can't imagine how excited Nissan must be to have the Cummins golden goose in their garage now.

We've got a whole stable of "small engines" from the 2.8L I4 to the 5.0L V8 that were all designed around the same time.   Your truck is a 2006 (and a 2500) and therefore has to meet different emissions standards than the 2014-15 Light-duty trucks do.   This has a significant impact on fuel economy.  the V8 is also using an SCR system for aftertreatment.  Ultimately, that means you're adding Diesel Exhaust Fluid, which helps reduce NOx, which means the engine can get better fuel economy.

You also have to look at the speed for the rated power and torque numbers.  The V8 probably makes the torque and power at a much higher RPM than the I6 (I don't have the numbers in front of me)  which means that even though the numbers are "close" .... in daily use it's not quite as "available" if that makes sense.

The final thing that drives the difference in fuel economy is the vehicle itself: weight, height, tire selection, drivetrain, etc. The curb weight, height, etc for a 2500 is noticeably larger than a 1500.   Heavier tires with higher rolling resistance are also standard on the 2500.

If you look at the difference between your 2006 and a new 2014 2500, the fuel economy is almost identical (the 2014 may be rated higher.  Fuelly data is spotty but shows both vehicles averaging 16-17 mpg in the real world)   BUT, the 2014 has another  ~150 lbft of torque and maybe another 50 hp (depending on your engine version)  AND, the exhaust that exits the vehicle, on average, is cleaner than the air that enters the vehicle. The exhaust on the 2014 is MANY times cleaner than on the 2006.   So, you get more power, a cleaner environment, and maybe a little better economy.

On Toyota News Network last week I saw that Toyota was considering Cummins for the 2015 Tundra... drool...

I am biased and only drive cars from the company that signs my paychecks, the big discount doesnt hurt either but we both drive Toyotas.

I drive a 2007 Tundra Limited. It is a badass truck, but the 5.7L probably doesnt do any better on gas than your 2500 Ram. With the lift and 35" tires, I average 11.5 in town. That's really all I drive, not much highway in my life. If I drive long distances (over 12 miles... lol) we take my wifes car.

She drives a 2012 Highlander. The V6 AWD is surprisingly fun to drive! It gets about 22 in town and 27 highway (When she is driving it) and is about the safest feeling vehicle I've ever driven. That AWD system is so smart, you just point it where you want it to go and hit the pedal, the car will figure everything else out, and even fix almost any of your mistakes or road hazards such as hitting ice or hydroplaning. Not real good for burnouts though... lol

For hauling tri stuff I drive my wife's 05 Subaru Outback XT. I can fit the bike in the back if I fold both seats down without removing the front wheel. I would not recommend it because the turbo has issues unless you follow Subaru's ridiculous maintenance schedule of a full synthetic oil change every 3750 miles. A maintenance schedule they changed after turbos started blowing up due to their faulty design.

My daily driver is a bmw 328i with sport suspension, rear wheel drive, and manual gearbox. I treated myself after many years of driving older used cars. This is an older pic before I removed the front plate, with a little processing.

I bought myself a Porsche 944Turbo a few months back..it's an '87 with around 105k on the odometer. The list of upgrades and mods the previous owner did is very, very long but the changes from stock were tasteful and restrained, so I don't feel like I'm driving something that's barely street legal. I only drive it maybe once a week. Mostly I just rub it with a diaper.

Your 944 is a beauty.  I love it.  One of these has been on my list for a while.

This is my current ride (at least early in the morning on the marsh, river or ocean).  My daughter helped with the paint/transformation (which was a blast).

Too far from the OP?

Jetta Sportwagen TDI.

BMW 335d

Subaru WRX wagon

MINI Countryman (diesel if possible!)

Challenger R/T (or SRT if I can find the right one)

Older BMW M5

It was too big for me... but I'm used to smaller sports cars. The whole car just feels big, both sitting and driving it. I really like the look of it and the motor was good (couldn't justify the SRT premium) for driving... but it had all the inconveniences of a "big car" while trying it's best not to be one.

If you've got 3 kids, the 300c or Charger are better options than the Challenger, and of the ones you listed the M5 is the way to go so long as you've got enough put back after buying one to fix the inevitable problems that pop up.

It's only got 1k miles on it and I'd rather sell it now than wait a few more years and lose a lot of $ on it and I'd rather use the cash to put some more upgrades into my C5 (and bike... and house... and Christmas...haha...)

Plus the time I enjoy the car most is when it's sitting still... and that's now how you should feel about a car. (and probably why it only has as many miles as it does :/ )

Had the Acura long? I've looked at a couple in the past, but I'm always a bit afraid of the upkeep on it, although I haven't researched enough to know if it's a big deal on the NSX's.

I quickly browsed an article in Men's Health that talked about doing a triathlon, and how it wasn't really that hard. With a "tsk!" I quickly turned the page while thinking, "Yeah, right!"
