Pre-race routine:

Rode from my hotel to transition at 4:15. Pretty surreal biking thru downtown Chicago in the early AM. I was luck enough to rack up on the pavement.

Shocked at the number of clowns who missed entry into transition because they arrived late. I passed them as I walked to the swim and felt sorry for the 1st couple and then by the 25th I lost my empathy for their situation.
Event warmup:

Setup and cop a squat to take in everything.
Swim
  • 24m 15s
  • 750 meters
  • 03m 14s / 100 meters
Comments:

A little chop esp. near the seawall. Hit by/hit many folks. I understand now why it is so hard to get a rythm & a respectable swim time in this race.
What would you do differently?:

If I could swim fast i would get out of the main lane and go outside.
Transition 1
  • 02m 29s
Comments:

Stripped the suit as soon as I reached transition.
What would you do differently?:

N/A This is a long transition run uphill at the end.
Bike
  • 41m 55s
  • 22 kms
  • 31.49 km/hr
Comments:

Pretty good surface. Lots of small rollers due to overpasses. In addition to headwinds you get smacked randomly by crosswinds coming from between buildings.
What would you do differently?:

Ride with similar riders. Despite being a huge race, I was either being passed by elites or passing slwoer riders.
Transition 2
  • 02m 10s
Comments:

A little winded due to heavy headwinds before dismount.
Run
  • 28m 13s
  • 5 kms
  • 05m 38s  min/km
Comments:

Worst part of this race. 2nd class race course running through grass and on public paths. They could have killed it had we run through the city.
What would you do differently?:

Understand the course.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked bike over to transition. Good grub & unlimited brew once you find it.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of understanding this course's challenges.

Event comments:

Race organiztion from the expo on was sketchy. Soo many odd choices by the race organizers. My overall experience was not positive.

BTW did I mention there was no Clyde division. WTF! One of the biggest races in the country without this division. I have been to races 1/4 of this size with 20+ clydes participating.

I'm doing the 22 week sprint tri program and the 2 mile bike ride it starts with is not very challenging. I see this as a opportunity to train the right way and challenge myself. Any ideas?

This past spring I realized a few of us were heading in the wrong direction physically. We were getting together for poker games and kids’ birthdays, but that was it.

The challenge? The accomplishment? I want to do this because it is an opportunity to live life. The event is an indoor sprint triathlon. I get to experience the challenge on a safer scale.

Since your “A” race is your marathon, which you stated in your question, this should be your main focus. I encourage you to taper a bit for the sprint distance triathlon.

Should I have time goals for the first sprint? Should I just finish the race at a reasonable pace? I'm not sure how to approach this.
