Subject: 310 vs 910
i have been reading many articles about this but cant really seem to find what i am looking for. I really would like to get one of these watches. Trying to figure out the best for me. Of course the 910 looks better but for 150$ is it truly worth it. I very rarely do open water swims, but if i get the 310, does it still calculate the overall distance that i swam in open water. ive read that it doesnt have a lap counter but in a pool i really care about how far i swam, does it do this also. I can get the 310 for 179$ vs 329$ for the 910. when i was comparing them side by side they both seemed to have the same features. I have also been reading about the instant pace problems with the 910. this of course is one reason why i want a triathlon specific watch over my 500. between than and something that can calculate the distance i swam because i always lose track of the laps!!!!

Neither of these watches are 100% accurate so you need to accept about 95% accuracy at the moment.

The 310 will calculate distance in open water using its GPS but the signal often gets lost when the arm you're wearing it on goes under the water so the resulting GPS map can look erratic. Some people put it in their swimming cap to try and avoid this but I've no idea if that works.

The 310 doesn't count laps.

I've owned a 310 and now use a 910 - for me the 910 has a far better user interface and the swimming features are much better. It's still not perfect but I can accept that - it's still easily good enough for what I use it for.

I originally had a 305 and went right to a 910. I've been very happy with my 910.

I was in the same boat over a year ago. I was using a Forerunner and wanted to upgrade. After a lot of research I went with the 910 and have been very happy with it.

310XT dont do indoor swim the 910 does indoor. On open water swim if 910 and 310 are submerged does not accurately measure distances. I wear my 310XT behind my head when swimming to get accurate gps data. If your picky with more details on your workout 910 has more data.

I was in the exact same boat as you. I couldn't figure out why it was worth the $150 premium to have a 910 over a 310. I waited and waited but decided to get the 910 last week after a site had a sale + discount code going on to where I got it for $320 . What it came down to me was the much thinner profile (910 is already big enough!) and the pool swim data (and the cheapest 910 I have ever found new). Although I thought the pool thing was useless, it does point out what someone told me and I never believed: that I'm an over glider (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OPrNv_G-YlQ). I plan to work on it starting week. The stroke thing is nice and having my pool data with me will help let me know if I'm improving my swim at all. I've been stagnate for 7 months. Is the pool swim feature worth $150? Well....depends. I've only had the watch for a week and really like it so far but it mainly came down to the thinner design for me. I was going to say that 910 supports more power meters but it seems like the 310 supports them too, so that point is invalid.

I got mine from from bikeparts.com. I know it had to be a glitch on their system since retailers are not allowed to discount Garmins at all. So says the mighty Garmin. The price is back to normal now. Amazon DID have it for $340ish about 2 months ago. They had that and the 310 was like $150 but they have since gone back up to full retail. Still bought $100+ other items from them as I'm replacing my crank soon for a power meter one so they still have my business. Amazon isn't always the cheapest for bike parts, some of the times they are though. Finally figured that out.

I saw this deal through my daily search on Google shopping for the 910 (wanting to get a power meter sort of makes you want to save every penny...). Saw it on sale and took the plunge.

It's about the swim features. I had both and did OWS with them. I have a swim route that is 2.4 miles.

6mile OWS with 310
2.4mile OWS with 910

Since pool swimming is important to you, add a 3rd choice:
310 and a garmin swim (About the same or a bit cheaper than a 910)
The swim is much better in the pool than the 910 since it can do 'drill sets' and is much sleeker. Plus, you can wear it as an everyday watch.

Even with the 910's better smoothing for OWS, it is still more accurate to just have it on your head, in the swimcap.
The only time where I would rather have the 910 vs. 310&a swim is during a race.

I have had my 910 for about 2 years and have used it a ton.

I really like using it in the pool.  A tip though, if you are doing intervals and want to keep track of separate splits hit LAP then Stop.  This will record your lap time for uploading to Garmin Connect.  Also, I have not had any issues with using the 910 in OWS.  It will lose the GPS signal when you are treading water but it picks right back up when you start swimming.  On the bike and the run, I have not had the pacing issues that everyone else has. However, here is the list of problems I have had:

1.  Heart Rate Monitor:  I went through 3 straps until I finally got one from Garmin that actually works.  They sent me three replacements because the HR data was way off.  Now, not a problem.

2.  Elevation:  The altimeter in my 910 has gone out.  Garmin is sending me a brand new 910 as a replacement.  I noticed this on my last 60 mile ride that showed I went 100,000+ feet in climb.  I'm a stud, but even I have my limits.

3.  Multi sport Mode:  This is a great feature but it is very easy to screw it up in the heat of a race.  Not really Garmin's fault, but I just wanted to complain.

4.  Connecting to ANT:  Sometimes it takes mulitple attempts to connect the 910 to my ANT stick.  I think my stick is getting worn out, but that is rather annoying.

Other than these issues, I really enjoy the 910.  I think the GPS is very good and tracks my workouts very closely. I would like to see an improvement that would give real time tracking to my wife so she knows where I am when Im out on my solo long runs / rides, just in case.

Go with the 910.  1 watch.  Solid investment.  Garmin stands behind their products.
