Thinking back on the time that has passed from "Day One" of your triathlon experience, and the knowledge you've attained until today, finish this sentence in regards to training, family life, or whatever crosses your mind. I'm just getting started and would really like to hear what you guys/gals have to say in this regard.

"I wish I had/had not........"

...bought my first bike off ebay.

the listing said there were only 500 miles on it.  Yeah, the frame had 500 miles (and is fine, and looked terrific), but the components were all worn out.

...eaten 3 gels every hour of the bike during Leadman Tri Tempe...couldn't run at ALL for 5.5 miles of the 8 mile trail run due to BAD cramps. Learned that more is definitely NOT better!

  • ..borrowed a wetsuit from someone smaller than me!

  • ...eaten at Olive Garden before my 2nd run during RAGNAR!

I have so many, but I'll count back down the top 3.  They are all injury related.

#3 I wish I had not landed my right heel on that stupid blue reflector at mile 18 on the R&R Arizona marathon.  Not only did it blow my 3:15 BQ pace (I finished in 3:30, and I needed 3:20), it took six weeks of PT before I could walk right again.  Such a little blue reflector...

#2 I wish I had known that dark nearly black urine is a very strong symptom of rhabdomylosis, a potentially fatal or at least kidney damaging (to the point of kidney death and needing a transplant) side effect of muscle injury.  I had that part way through an IM Canada, and I kept running.  I had a light case, but still - everyone should know about this. If when I'm sixty or seventy I have kidney problems, I will wonder if this was a cause.  I http://www.webmd.com/a-to-z-guides/rhabdomyolysis-symptoms-causes-treatments

#1 I wish that four weeks ago today I paid attention on the sharp left turn on my 5 hour bike ride on an overly-familiar trail.  I wasn't paying attention, I hit the turn at 18 mph, I crashed, I broke my left collarbone.  I had surgery a few days later to install a titanium plate to hold my collarbone together and likely it will be there forever.  Last week I saw the doc, and it's not progressing quite as well as he'd like.  Now I'm worried about "bone viability", and whether the break will heal by itself or I'll need a second surgery to do a bone graft from my hip.  And I can't do any SBR until at least January, and that blows not only Ironman Arizona but puts me way behind for Ironman Los Cabos.

So - lesson to all.  Watch the road.  And check the color of your pee.

I wish I had not, three years ago after signing up for my first ever sprint tri, promptly ordered a lime green one piece tri suit. When it arrived and I tried it on, I was mortified. Never wore it, never will wear it.

Come to think of it...it might now make a great Halloween costume on Thursday. Scariest outfit ever.

Oooh....a lime green suit sounds cool! Are we the same size? I have a black one and it's very not me. Lime green might go better with my red hair (the color I usually dye it).

I wish I had realized that you have to TRAIN for the bike before I did my first sprint and my first Oly. In the sprint, I actually did OK on the bike since it was mostly uphill and everyone was on MTB's (X-Terra), but my run was one of the crappiest of my life. I almost had to walk the last half mile of a 5K. In the Oly, I beat 13 people on the bike, out of 136. At least one had only one arm, two were over seventy, and several weighed close to 300 pounds.

I wish I had discovered this sport in my 20's or early 30's. (This assumes, of course, that I lived somewhere and had a life/job situation where I could train, which wasn't the case much of the time.) In particular, I wish I'd discovered it when I lived in Hawaii. I wish one of my coaches had stopped berating me for my relative lack of short-course run speed and telling me what I wasn't capable of, and appreciated my ridiculous endurance as iron-distance potential. Not bragging....in my early 20's, I could run like Rinny (2:43 marathon, on a hilly course on a fairly bad day), and swim faster. Now I'm always left wondering if I could have somehow developed the bike ability to really do something with myself, be a pro, race Kona, etc. Too old now.....there's age group, but not the same.

I wish I had been able to afford a better bike, so I could stop wondering how much is about the bike and how much is me!

Forgotten the body glide on a very hot and humid day. That shower afterwards was excruciating. I was bowlegged for days.

eta: I wish I'd learned to swim a lap before I turned 49.

I wish I had started earlier. Tri training has really changed my life for the better.

I wish I could learn to avoid the "see food" diet.

I wish I had known how long it takes to maximize your potential in this sport. I am not sure I have done that yet, but still improving and realizing that its not one work out, one week, or even one season that leads to improvement. Gradual improvement over time, persistence pays off.

    No regrets, but lessons learned:

Don't ride my bike at 20 mph around an uneven middle school track

Take longer to run the last 200 meters of my Ironman

Don't take an inhaler puff more than once in a race

Wash my cloth saddle bag, especially since I pee on the bike

Mint glide doesn't taste as good as it smells

This is a great thread. I would agree with seeing tri clothing in person when possible before purchasing. I picked out my first tri top last year on line. My hubby bought it for me for christmas. Darn thing looks like a maternity top so I have never actually worn it. I can't stand my exercise clothes flapping around at all. A lime green tri suit sounds awsome! :-) My biggest regret would be going for a test run back in January to see if my knee was really injured or not. I would have done much better to take some time off instead. As a result of that test run, I had a miserable year this year only getting in one race. Here we are 9 months later and I think my knee is almost all the way better. I had to stop cycling and running for a few months to get here though. So when in doubt, take the day off. No need to go "test".

Yeah, black, lime green, purple, blue...not ever wearing a one piece in public! Although, I have a better body now--maybe I should pull that sucker back out and give it another chance. My guess is I'll still be mortified!

I wish I had...started triathlon sooner! I could have used more time in the 30-34 age group.

I wish I had not...neglected my run training as much as I have.

Had. Learned the value of consistency in my first season of triathlon.

Had not. Walked in the run of my last IM. It felt like giving up.

Had. Learned how much faster low rolling resistance tires make you before my fourth season of triathlon.

Had not. Started training too soon after my last race. My legs are still beat.

Had. Learned to swim as a kid. This adult-onset swimming is hard.

Had not. Hmmm. Let me think some.

Had: started earlier than last year (at age 53). Apparently, I thought I had some talent in golf and spent way too much time trying to maximize it. I'm having way to much fun trying to get better at s/b/r...only played about 5-6 rounds this year.

Had not: tried to recapture running speed/endurance so quickly...PF and calf issues have educated me (the hard way) to adopt a slower and more consistent approach (thank you BarryP).

"I wish I had: Trained More Smartly"

This probably doesn't apply to the family/life side of things, but I found that this solved (or would have solved) most of my problems. Train appropriately for the distance you want to compete in (if time allows for it) and most issues problems that arise in a race get addressed here. This usually covers issues that come up with clothing, nutrition, injuries, etc.

However, this is more easily said than done.

Oh, and I wish I had worn sunscreen. That tramp stamp at the top of my waistline is still there.

As a triathlete, there is one acronym that you just can’t fathom ever having next to your name in a race report – DNF: DID NOT FINISH.
