Saddened but unfortunately not surprised to learn that Ryder Hesjedal has admitted to doping. While I would still like to believe that he won the Giro clean and that cycling is cleaner now than it was, with so many of the old guard still involved (competing, coaching, DSing, as doctors, trainers, etc) the harder it is to believe cycling has turned a corner.

I feel the same way as you. Sad, but not surprised. When he won the Giro, my SO and I actually thought that he had probably doped. So many of his cohorts from his mountain biking era had. And he was a Postal rider, etc. etc.

Even if he won the Giro clean, I still can't respect that. I actually don't think it is possible to be completely "clean" now. He took a lot of gains from doping and he took opportunities from clean riders, so that's why I don't think he can ever be "clean". I guess this just hits closer to home because some of those riders are my friends.

I agree; while I understand that many athletes felt they had no choice but to dope, I feel bad for those who made the right choice and as a result were not able to compete on the biggest stages. As a result of choosing to live according to the rules of their sport, they were left unable to compete at the highest levels or toil away in obscurity for those who were cheating.

I will throw out the idea that from (at least) 2010 Ryder has been clean, if one accepts :L'equips findings and extrapolates. In 2010 he rode really well and it seems plausible the Giro win was clean.

Probably goes back much further than that…. In the 60's some cyclists were experimenting with Amphetamine and Cocaine to gain an advantage. Most famous victim on this was probably Tommy Simpson that passed away during stage 13 of the 1967 Tour de France on a stage up Mt. Ventoux. Amphetamine and alcohol was found in his blood.

Safe to say, as long as we've had competition in the world, someone has tried to find a way to get an unfair advantage.

How many Tour's would Greg Lemond have won if we put away all those dirty dopers.
