Subject: is junk food okay sometimes?
21 year old triathlete here. I guess like any other person my age (maybe any age for that matter) i crave junk food sometimes. At night i randomly will want Mcdonalds for dinner, and so on. When i go out to eat with my friends i dont always get the healthy meal, i'll get a burger and fries. I generally eat healthy, and only drink water. (i want to fuel my body of course and eat good for my overall health). But i'm wondering is eating junk food a few times a week okay? or is it detrimental to my training?

If you want it to perform well you have to give it the best fuel possible.

You're 21 - I see my share of pro triathletes that age and they are on the junk food too - but their training regime is heavy.

When you get older - it isn't so easy. You'll need to put the right fuel in to get the engine to perform.

BUT we all need to let our hair down occasionally - go for your life!

I still eat bad but way way better than before. 4 Hamburger Helper dinners/week was the norm for me for about 5 years strait before I got into IM training this year. Can you guess I'm single yet? Can't always eat perfectly but when you pig out, try balance it out. At the end of my IM training, anything went. I still ate good food (juicer is awesome) but I was inhaling anything I could since I kept losing weight that I didn't want to lose. 10+ months since last Hamburger Helper though

I would not obsess about it. At your age and with heavy training, it's not so much a matter of putting "bad" stuff in (you'll probably survive a little extra fat/salt/calories) but whether you are putting enough healthy nutrition into the machine as well. If McDonalds is routinely substituting for real meals with veggies and fruits and less processed meats and grains, then you're shortchanging yourself. Poor nutrition can affect your recovery from hard training and your immune system, making you more vulnerable to illnesses and injury. If it's just a treat but you're also eating plenty of healthy foods, as long as you're at a healthy weight, I wouldn't worry about it too much.

You simply can't be good all the time, just not in the human nature. Once in a while is fine, often, probably not a great idea.

I think it depends how you view it.

Some people see junk food as a treat but the clue is in the title.

Personally I think a few times a week is too much for anybody. It really is rank, vile, chemically laden, crap and you're making your body have to deal with processing it.

'junk' makes it sound like empty calories or just a waste of time but this stuff damages your body, clogs your arteries as well as other harmful effects.

I like a bit of chocolate and some ice cream now and then (once or twice a week) and I like a beer a few times a month too but I don't go near junk food.

Sorry to be a bore.

I think it is fine. I sometimes crave junk food but I won't eat it. Then I eat everything else in the house that is healthy. I find that I eat way more calories of healthy stuff trying to satisfy my craving. I've decided to just eat what I want, if it is healthy I will chow down and if it is junk food I will eat it in moderation.

I eat what I want. Usually, that's fairly healthy. Other times, not so much.

I'll have fast food once a month or so.  McDonald's or Burger King, whatever strikes my fancy.

I'm pretty good with my diet most of the time and log all my food on WW Online to keep myself honest.  Down 20lbs in the past two years.  I eat fish or chicken during the week and limit myself to red meat on the weekends.  My biggest weakness isn't junk food, but alcohol.  I really enjoy having a couple of glasses of red wine with dinner most evenings.

So... you were only mostly dead?

My general philosophy is 'everything in moderation'.  I try to eat healthy most of the time, but sometimes I need to have some ice cream... not want, NEED.

Many scientific studies have shown that a diet of only carbs, fats, and proteins will lead to eventual death at the end of your life.

Everything in moderation....including moderation.

Drinking it? Dude, you don't even have to drink it to be affected by it.

You're 21. Have fun, eat what you want! If you are serious about tri's/other athletic events and being at the top then yeah...watch what you eat. I sure try and watch what I eat but, if someone brings a tray of cookies to work (or fries up some just picked Morel mushrooms like yesterday) I'm going to eat it!
