So I watch this 4th grader ride his unicycle to school every day and I decided I had to try it out. I got a 20" unicycle on craigslist today.

Anyone out there ride a unicycle and have any tips for a unicycle newbie?

They make several different kinds of trainers with training wheels. Try to get going on the one you bought. If that fails, ask that 4th grader if he has a trainer you could buy or use. Wear wrist guards and a helmet!!!

Once upon a time I did.     I was 17 in this picture.   Tips.  Practice in a hall way, or someplace where you can support yourself easily on your left and right.   It's kind of like learning to ride your bike on rollers.   You know you are going to fall, and often.    This being said, falls on a unicycle are mild when you learn to "bail out" of falling.  The micro second that you know you are going to go over is when you take your feet off the pedals and let the unicycle go.  It will shoot out from under you and you will land on your feet.     Never ride a unicycle all the way to the ground.

There is a avid cyclist here that has taken to a unicycle.  He made one with a standard bike wheel diameter.  He mountain bikes with it and competed in the Mt Charleston hill climb on it AND kicked my but.  He has done some long rides on it as well.  It's mind-boggling.

thanks guys! I have learned how to "mount" the unicycle, but haven't gone anywhere yet without immediately falling off. I think it will take a TON of practice.

My "hazing" when I started working at the bike shop was when I was told to assemble and test ride a unicycle. I built it well, but the test ride: well: that didn't go well.....

Start in a corner or leaning against something until you get the hang of it. Starting without support is a skill on its own. Ride along a wall to learn. If you can, get a couple of friends to walk/run beside you and put your hands on their shoulders while learning. Learn how to let the unicycle fall while you ride it down and remain standing because there are A LOT of bails when you are first learning.
