Before heading to swim I ran some errands and happened upon a friend outside the local brew pub "You want a beer?" "Sure why not." Three beers later I finally make it to the pool buzzed wondering how well this was going to go. It happens to be my best swim ever. Totally in the zone, effortless laps. Is this a precursor to a bad habbit? Am I now going to shotgun beers instead of gu?

Shockingly, I have never tried this.

I usually swim at lunch--might present a "problem"--but you've definitely piqued my curiosity.

Hahaha I have actually experienced this as well. You really have to hit it just right, though--too much or not enough and it will be a rough workout.

Over the last few years I have once or twice ended up trying to fit in a swim workout after going to happy hour. It has never ended very well, mostly because I lose the general will to try and cut the thing short.  I also only recommend this in a pool that is shallow enough to stand up in

Hoping you were running errands on foot.

A great way to swim faster is to relax in the water.  Lots of swimmers are way too tense in the pool and simply relaxing can make a big difference.

I have done this numerous times. Our masters swim group starts at 7 PM Tuesday and Thursday nights. After work we usually have "Thirsty Thursdays" each week so I often have 2-3 beers in me before I get in the water. That totally doesn't work for running though......

Totally trying this. I've skipped swims because of happy hour. Maybe it'll be what gets me to a break through haha

I'm sure you meant this as a joke, but unless you're planning on downing some beers before your next race you're probably just looking at a bad habit. Part of the reason you were so comfortable is due to dilation of your blood vessels near your skin (which gives you that warm sensation when drinking). Your body lost that initial shock from the cold water that requires you to get a good warm up in before heading to the main set. Without giving your muscles the proper warm up you aren't really training effectively or could be setting yourself up for injury.

So if your local pool is like any of mine, the water temp is between 82 and 85 degrees. The alcohol will make you feel warmer in the water even though your core temperature is actually dropping. I would say that it would be better to train in as close to an environment as the one you will be racing in.

Just a thought!

This seems to be pushing the boundaries of danger. Please don't recommend this.

But of course. Car is for cold weather and long miles.
