Hi folks, i've used the search feature and came up blank, so i though I'd ask the masses... if you're experiencing a pinched nerve (C8) in your neck with involvement into the shoulder area, should you take swimming out of the mix for a while, or just keep things light and easy?
Thanks

Sorry to hear you're struggling with this.  I got one four days before a HIM this summer and it SUCKED.

I wasn't able to get rid of mine until I completely rested it. I couldn't really extend my arm or put any weight/pull on it and couldn't turn my head normally to breathe, so had to really over-rotate to get a breath.  If you can swim and your form is not al, maybe that might help it, but otherwise, I would lay off swimming. I think mine was exacerbated by some personal stress and quite a bit of driving.  If you can limit driving, computer work, and even phone/texting stuff, I think that can help.  I also found sleeping on my back, mummy style, helped too.  Good luck :)

Glad to hear that you're in the clear now!
Time off was kind of what I was thinking would have to happen. Happy to hear I wasn't just being a wimp by not just plowing through.
Appreciate the advice

Okay, here's my experience, so take it for what it's worth..

I ended up with two bulging disks in 2010 which were pinching a nerve. I ignored the problem and it got much worse (to the point of one rupture). Had I been smarter about things, I could have done PT from the start and probably got them settled back into place. But instead, I sought advice from the internet, continued to train, blew out a disk and began to lose feeling/use of my right arm. This was fixed with surgery (I had the two disks removed and part of my neck fuzed together) and I'm back in the game after over 2 years of no exercise.. It sucked. It sucked bad. I'll never be able to ride in aero position as my neck doesn't have a lot of flexibility.

So, my advice is to talk with both an Orthopedic specialist and a Physical Therapist. Get a CT scan so you know exactly what you're dealing with instead of speculating. If required, I would recommend beginning proper (and supervised) treatment ASAP so it doesn't turn into something much much worse.

So that's my 2 cents and I wish you the best of luck!

I have a herinated disk (C6-C7) that I fought for 6 months. what helped me was standing in my office instead of sitting all day. I ended up having to get injections in my neck (worked great), but the standing relieved the pressure that I felt daily.
