Subject: Costa Rica Recs?

10-12 day trip in february. Thinking Arenal, Monteverde, and a beach hut. Already have my pick in Arenal, but would like input on an itinerary and lodging on Monteverde and a beach.

Was thinking SJO - Arenal - Monteverde - Beach? Liberia too expensive to fly into

Lodging likes - unique, rustic, open air, lots of animals, jungle sounds at night, don't mind bugs (much), want to be woken up by howlers, access to hikes/nature, ocean view/beachfront, hammocks are a must, etc. But not a dingy surf camp. do NOT want luxury, or elegance, or room service and pool cabanas.

What beach area? Guanacaste? Montezuma? Manual Antonio? Carate? I know travel times are longer due to the road condition etc.

Anyone stayed at Ylang Ylang in montezume? Lookout Inn in Osa/Carate?

Any advice is appreciated. I am usually pretty good at finding cool places to stay, and have found a couple but need a little focus as to where to look.

Thanks

We spent a week In Guanacaste around last New Years and loved it, but were going for more relaxation and comfort than it sounds like you are trying to find. We were a group of 8, including teens, and rented a villa with staff (great bartender!) about 200 yards from Ocotal beach, which is near Coco. We flew into Liberia. We spent one day on the ocean on a sail/lunch/snorkel trip, one day visiting a volcano plus horse back riding, hiking and mud baths, and a day zip lining. Otherwise we spent a lot of time on the beach and at the pool and hot tub at our villa. Not much help, sorry, but big thumbs up for Costa Rica! People were super nice!

Back in 1999 I went there on my honeymoon. I can't remember the details, other than I wished we had stayed at Arenal for a majority of the trip. The beach was and the water so-so, and there wasn't much to do. All the cool stuff to do was near Arenal. If I ever go back I'm staying in Arenal.

That's my only input. Not what you asked for. I know.

Either way you will have an amazing trip and time!

You might check out Nosara. A co-worker of mine goes down there quite bit. He likes to surf and fish. Its supposed to be pretty laid back not touristy. Not where you wanted, but it could make a nice day trip or overnight option while you're down there. http://www.anywherecostarica.com/destinations/nosara

I can ask him where he stays if you like, I believe he stays at the same condo/rental each time.

We are heading to Nosara Dec 19-26th. My husband went there about 12 years ago and loved it. He is a surfer (I am not) but I am willing to try. We are staying at Kayasol which is seems like a low key, laid back place to stay. It's a surf camp and VERY affordable. I'll let you know how it is!

I stayed at Ylang Ylang in Montezuma on my honeymoon and I am not kidding when I tell you that I want to move there someday. It. Is. FABULOUS!!! Montezuma is a teeny little "town" about a 10-minute beach walk from Ylang Ylang with some shops and restaurants and is also the headquarters of some tours - Ylang Ylang can set you up with hikes, zip lines, about any adventure you're up for.

The food was fabulous. The staff was amazing. I think it's reasonably prices for all you get. The pool and beach are great. It's not too big, not too small. And I love the fact that it was built with the environment in mind, and you can really feel that. I got a massage when I was there, and I was essentially naked on a table in a tent in the middle of the jungle. Fabulous. Oh, and there are monkeys everywhere! And we saw a whale while we were at happy hour!

I could go on and on. It's great. You should go!!
