Friend of a friend is selling her 2010 Trek Speed Concept 7.0. I would post a photo but the albums don't seem to be working right now. It's black, white and pink, no cosmetic damage or wrecks. Athlete has not raced the past two seasons so low mileage.

Upgrades:
Duotap sensor w/ bontrager computer
SRAM rival crankset
Bontrager draft box
Bontrager Xxl carbon H20 cage

Let's assume the bike fits me and I can afford it.
She is asking $1500.

Yay or negotiate? And why?

1.  I don't think Rival is an upgrade on that bike.

2.  It's a decent price for that bike....especially if it has low miles like it sounds like.

3.  The white/black/pink paint scheme will make it a WSD model (women's specific).  Be VERY careful with making sure that bike fits you.  The WSD bikes are great for alot of women, not good at all for others.  It was built with th eidea that your legs are longer (in many cases much longer) proportionally to your torso.  Not all women are built that way.  That doesn't even take size into consideration......it can be a very specific fit so make sure you get checked out by someone who knows what they are doirng.

4. I ride a SC 7.5....if that bike fits you, you will love it.

This site has the 2011 (doesn't go down to 2010) valued at 1350ish for "like new" http://www.bicyclebluebook.com/SearchListingDetail.aspx?id=22645&make=750&model=64694&year=2011&priceMin=0&priceMax=20000&type=0

The upgrades do add a bit to the value of it.  You could probably ask for $1400, but I don't think you'd get it for less than that.  For what it's worth, I love my SC7.

Looks like a new one is $3k msrp. If it is in good shape and fits you it sounds like a good price to me.

Negotiating depends on the friendship and how you feel about the price. If it was on craigslist I would probably offer $1,300 just to see if I could get away with it. If it is a friend and I think the price is fair I'd likely just pay the $1,500 and everyone feels good about the deal. Depends on the relationship but sometimes haggling is not worth it.

Quick ebay search shows $1,750 - $2,500. Looks like $1,500 is a fair deal.

Also keep in mind the WSD model cuts waaaay down on your resale ability.

I would definitely have her meet me at my LBS to make sure I can be "fit" to it. We are similar in stature/height/proportions at first glance but I know it's not for certain until I get the bike shop to look at me on it.

Looks like they come with SRAM Apex - I know nothing about this stuff though.

Honestly, since it's a WSD model....if I was serious about that bike I'd go to someone who really knows tri bike fits.....if you have one at your LBS then good...but if not, I'd find one. The components in 2010 for the lower end 7 series bikes were all over the place. I'm not sure Rival was an "upgrade" then......not much difference between the two anyway.

My 13 year old rides a WSD Madone......but she is 5'9 with a 35 inch inseam. (yes, really)  I realize that she's on the extreme end of long legs/short torso....but that's what Trek had in mind for WSD.

Just make sure you don't need a set back seat post before you buy. /sarc

Assuming it fits, and assuming it's what you want, then $1500 seems fair. I don't see any side as "winning" at that price.

I agree though that a WSD model potentially hurts the resale value as compared to a neutral or "mens" bike.

I disagree that the WSD models hurt resell.  While it obviously cuts out a big part of the market, it is also a selling feature.  It's hard to find stock on WSD models, so if you're determined to have one you will snap one up.

It sounds great, good luck on the fit!

Well, that always hurts resale.

And it's not a selling feature for all women....or at least it shouldn't be because it's not generically made for ALL women.

Rival is equivalent to Ultegra according to my engineer friend who used Rival to build his road bike. Not as nice as Red, but still a good component set.

If it fits it sounds like it would be a nice upgrade for you at a decent price. Nice looking bike for sure.

I love my 7.0 SC. I got my bike shop to go down on the price by 400 bucks for the brand new one last year in the middle of summer. The Wsd model Will be harder to resell IMO. My bike shop owner's wife rides the same bike as I do just that it's a small size and I asked him/her why the men's version and I think he pretty much said the same thing...(resell value). Not to steer you away.

She gets a new TT bike about every two years....he just got the new 9.9....dear lord it is awesome...

A couple of things...

There is no 2010 Trek Speed Concept.  2011 was the first model year.

The WSD for the Trek SC is identical to the regular SC.  There is no difference beyond paint scheme and the stock saddle.

Not true.

Red is equivalent to Dura-Ace, Force is equivalent to Ultegra, Rival is equivalent to 105.  Rival is third in SRAM's hierarchy.

And I would still consider 105 superior to Rival.

As for the bike - love my SC, and the price is fair, but as someone else said you may be able to negotiate a little bit.  As for resale value, that's not a consdieration for me when buying a bike.  I'm keeping it for a number of years by which time it's value will have decreased a fair bit anyways.  If you're looking to keep this for a number of years then I wouldn't care about resale too much.

I have a SC also and when I bought mine the shop said the same thing about the WSD (no difference except paint and saddle).

Weird - I see the bike in her 2010 race photos..? Is it possible she got the 2011 model in 2010?

Yes.  I got my 2012 SC late 2011.

That also makes sense, since the 2011 SC paint job matches the description of the one you're looking at.

My best friend has this exact bike. You're going to love it. She absolutely flies on it. Wait a year and then upgrade your wheels and you'll be a smoking fast pink streak.
