Two years ago it was put on by RR/Silverback and WTC/5150. I believe Sandy Cohen, who owns it now was the original owner. I should have replied before the drinking started....yeah, I'm pretty sure Jon is correct, ignore my previous post and Happy New Year everybody, let the drinking begin, I mean continue! |

A few of my racing buddies and myself from Des Moines are thinking of driving down for the event the evening before. Would you recommend based on years past? Sounds like it's fairly well organized, but things have changed due to it not being the 5150. This would be VERY early season for us since it stays colder up here a bit longer. We won't have ANY open water swims in so would just be more for fun and to get our "feet wet." Hope we can follow each others progress on here! We'll, it's no Hy-Vee but in years past it's been a good event. Under new race management this year but same RD as two years ago when it was the 5150 so I'm expecting good things this year. That's okay! Hy-Vee is great, but it's also pretty hyped up around here. I have done it every year but once due to either an injury or a pregnancy (can't even remember which now) and have enjoyed it. Also, have qualified for the 5150 Nationals the last three years. However, it sort of takes away from the "specialness" when they start begging people to take qualifying slots. It's so commercialized now. I am really looking forward to a smaller, NEW race in a different venue. I will probably try to volunteer and be a spectator at Hy-Vee, though, of course! Looking forward to this but haven't signed up yet. Waiting on the gals I train with. I know the price jumped up yesterday by $20-$25...THANKS! |

Master 3888 Overland Park, KS | Subject: RE: Kansas City Triathlon 2014 Yeah, the one thing I noticed about Hy-Vee is a ton of IA participants, which is logical being local etc. but also a ton of KS and MO participants. Also I was expecting to be BOP in my AG but was nearly top third with a 2:25 finish time. I think this year I'll try AG Nationals in Milwaukee, I heard it's an awesome race, good energy, well organized etc. Also: A really great race here is the Shawnee Mission Triathlon but that's July 13 which may be in the middle of your race season. The bike course is 4.5 mile loop around the park with some rolling hills so it will test you a little bit. The run course also has a few hills but the long course is shorter than a traditional olympic (1000 yd swim, 18 mi bike, 4.5 mi run). |

I will be doing the Chisago Lake HIM in MN on July 27. Sounds like a small-town, well-organized race as well. Also, the price was right at $80 compared to the $250 you pay for IM circuit races. I hear you about the finish times at Hy-Vee. Lots of newer triathletes and people who don't normally race. I would have been in the top 3 of the AG race over the past 2 years had I not raced in the Nationals. Makes you want to drop down. I am looking forward to something different and different competition. Although not sure I will be "race-ready" by May at the rate I am going. Also a little nervous about peaking too early for the November IM. Hoping to hit the HIM and stay around that range for a couple of months and then continue on towards IM goal. Learning experience! |
