I am looking for a good first timer's course, preferably with a relatively flat run . I know Luray is popular, but I wonder if both bike and run are dominated by hills? Running is my weakest leg. I have looked at Luray, Reston, Giant Acorn. Any suggestions?

Where are you located and how far are you willing to drive for the race?? If you're in NoVA then don't forget the MD Setup series--some nice FLAT courses there!! Or down south there's always Jamestown--on the same course as Patriot HIM--that's FLAT also!

I did this race last year and it's a great course; the bike and run are very flat (except for a bridge overpass). The only downside is the pretty significant run (uphill) from the beach to transition.

You can't get any closer to home than Nation's Tri.

It's September 7th and it fills up quickly.

Well, I don't think you'll find anything as flat as Jamestown. Giant Acorn has a fairly technical bike course.

You could also look at the Colonial Beach International:

Rock Hall and Maritime (both Setup Events in the Maryland series) are great courses... flat bike and run and the Rock Hall at least has a very well protected harbor swim.

Colonial Beach is great and also flat, but it also is a swim in the Potomac.  Personally I have done the DC Tri and Colonial Beach and liked them both.  Swimming in the Potomac in DC was not bad--the worst part was the fuel smell from the boats idling.

Naylor's Beach would be another good option, as it is a pancake flat run, and the swim is in the Rappahannock. There are a few climbs on the bike ride, but it's scenic, out in rivah country. It's located at a campground so you can bring an RV or pitch a tent if you want to stay the night.

I've done Nations, Luray and Giant Acorn. I'd say Nations was my least favorite mostly just because of the logistical challenges getting in and out and, at least when i did it, you had to drop your bike the night before. Luray was by far my most favorite - the swim is a little crowded because it's a pretty small reservoir but the bike course rocks and the run was good. For Luray, expect some hills. Giant Acorn was also great -- much flatter course and very scenic. The only thing I didn't like about Giant Acorn was that part of the run was through a field and then on dirt and gravel.

If it's your first one, I say go for Giant Acorn. The water is really warm so you don't have to worry about a wetsuit and it's good course.

Deciding on an Ironman as my first venture into triathlon was greeted with incredulity and astonishment combined with a hint of, "well, you're full of yourself aren't you?" and, "a bit ambitious?"

I have pedals with the cage and when I ride 2+ hours my legs feel much more tired then if I took out my husband's bike with clipless pedals. Do clipless pedals truly make the difference?

I quickly browsed an article in Men's Health that talked about doing a triathlon, and how it wasn't really that hard. With a "tsk!" I quickly turned the page while thinking, "Yeah, right!"

I started riding this spring with the Carnac shoes on Look pedals (with plenty of float). About five minutes into a ride I get sharp pain on the outer edge of my feet, just behind the pedal.

Knowing where the fluids are, how they will fit on your bike, how much to reach for, and when to reach for it should be understood prior to ever setting foot on the course.
