Sunny
Total Time = 2h 22m 25s
Overall Rank = 213/630
Age Group = M35-39
Age Group Rank = 33/72
Pre-race routine:

Been struggling with flu and sore throat this week. Also got next to no sleep as the bloke in the motel room next to mine was railing his girlfriend all night like you read about!!! From about 12:00am until 2:00am he was hammering her like anything!!! She seemed to be really, really, really enjoying his action but it meant that I got absolutely no sleep due to the paper thin walls.
Event warmup:

Nil - took advantage of my late wave start to catch up on lost sleep in my car!!!
Swim
  • 22m 10s
  • 1500 meters
  • 01m 29s / 100 meters
Comments:

Decided to start near the back right and start slowly due to illness and lack of sleep, plus I didn't do a warm-up due to the water temperature. Plan was to move to the middle of the creek into the slightly deeper water to take advantage of the helping current. However I got pushed a bit wide on the first buoy and ended up further right than I wanted. Still felt like I swam well though, rhythm was good and I passed plenty of people in the second half of the swim. Got out of the water feeling pretty comfortable.
What would you do differently?:

Start stronger and fight harder for position to take advantage of my race plan.
Transition 1
  • 01m 57s
Comments:

Took me a while to get up to speed, get my feet into the shoes and comfortable on the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Practice
Bike
  • 1h 13m 6s
  • 40 kms
  • 32.83 km/hr
Comments:

Really had to hold back and take it easy due to my lack of training recently and illness to make sure I had something left for the run. Actually felt fairly strong and comfortable for the most part which is encouraging and testament to the additional bike work that I had been doing. Headwind really picked up and took its toll on legs but actually felt okay at the end of the ride.
What would you do differently?:

Need to keep doing what I've been doing and continue to build my bike strength. Then I need to trust the work that I've don end be prepared to really push hard in races.
Transition 2
  • 01m 31s
Comments:

No issues
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 43m 30s
  • 10 kms
  • 04m 21s  min/km
Comments:

Felt pretty good off the bike surprisingly and probably went out a little too hard on the first lap. Rhythm and cadence felt good and I was passing quite a few people including in my age group. The heat, and maybe the flu, got to me a little on the second lap but I ran hard the whole way. Not a bad run really considering my fitness and the toughness of the course.
What would you do differently?:

Get fitter and faster?
Post race
Warm down:

Nil

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Fitness and illness.

Event comments:

Great race, great feel and atmosphere and excellent value for money.

I looked at the swim buoys and start thinking, "Man! How am I ever going to swim that? That looks like a very long distance from the bridge. I have never done it in one go." There's no turning back.

After doing duathlons for the last couple of years, I decided to go for a triathlon. Starting with an Olympic-distance race perhaps wasn't wise, but it was fun (of a sort).

Experts agree, doing a “mock,” triathlon on the course you’re racing can aid you in your training; performance and most of all quell some nervous energy.
