I recently purchase a trek speed concept 7.0. It has an index shifter on the right and friction shifter on the left. Took it to the trek store to have an index shifter put on the left and they told me that it was not possible. Anyone know if this is true. I had index shifters on my previous tri bike.

With the friction shifter you can fine tune the position of the front derailleur to keep the chain from rubbing it depending on which cog you're on in the rear.  That's why it's set up that way.

There's no need for index shifting on your front derailleur. There's only two positions.
