Just recently got a bike to start training for my first tri! Looking for insights on decent affordable wheel sets able to support 220 lbs. or so. Thanks in advance

I have ridden on 32 spoke and 16 spoke wheels.  Are you wanting high dollar wheel sets or standard wheel sets, or what exactly are you looking for?

I ride on a set of Cosmic Carbones ... from a carbon wheelset they are reasonably priced and you can find good deals on e-bay all the time.

Really just looking for an affordable set of good training wheels. I've been looking at aksium, rs10's, r500, and some fulcrums. I am a novice at cycling and don't have a very large budget. So probably standard wheel sets.

Hed 3's. If you really want to budget it you could just buy a front and get a cover for your current rear wheel.

If you just want a training set of wheels I have my stock wheels from my Felt B16 for sale that include a wheelcover for the rear for cheap in the classifieds.

Mavic Cosmic Carbone!!! No doubt. Decently priced and can take the weight. Thousands of miles on 'em and no trouble!

from a training point of view, I have nothing but Conti gatorskins on the back. Tend to have a lot of glass on the roads here.

i'm 285. Spinergy Stealth PBO have been bullet proof wheels for me. I have had great luck with Conti gatorskins, trying a set of gp4000s on my 808 zipps now, they seem to be pretty good as well.

Get touring wheels that have 25mm wide rims, 24 holes 2x lacing front / 32 holes 3x lacing rear. This will minimize pinch flats. Shimano 105 hubs are very reliable and easy to care for. The optimal tire size for you is 700c x 25mm front, and 700c x 28mm rear. This will reduce rolling resistace, and give you a smoother ride. Just make sure your bike frame can handle the rear 28mm tire.

I've ridden Felt TTR3 wheels from 204 pounds to 260. Never an issue and they work rather well as race wheels too.

I don't know about the others, but don't get Aksiums.  They are apparently rated for 185# riders and are not forgiving for larger riders - I actually pulled two spokes through the hub on a rear Aksium.  Mavic Open Pro's are strong wheels and are relatively inexpensive.

I have a couple sets of R500's that never caused a problem and haven't needed truing in years.  I also bought a set of Aerospoke years ago for a semi earo (but heavy) training set.  I race on HED 3's but there are other "Clydesdale" versions of ZIPPs that I'm looking at.

I think my next wheels with the the Shimano WH-RS31s. Right now, I have some inexpensive wheels on my bike and I am wondering how they will hold up. My first duathlon is at the end of March.

I have Specialized Armadillo tires. It's their version of the Gatorskins. I've ridden on them a year-and-a-half now with no more pinch-flats. I was averaging one a month until I got these. I ride over all kinds of stuff, not all on purpose ;-) and haven't had a flat yet. And they are 23 mm, not 25.

I have my stock Oval 330's and never had a problem from 285 lb to 250 lb.

I picked up a pair of Mavic CXP33's with Ultegra hubs and DT Swiss spokes for $159. I weight 215 and ride a lot. Last year I hit a pot hole that blew my tire out and I swear I thought my rim would have been shot but it was perfect. You want to talk about BOMB PROOF! I have 5000+ miles on them now and will buy another set at some point. I haven't had to true them yet...and I won't even knock on wood!

I ride with a guy that is a bigger dude. 6'5" and 275 ex football player...big guy. He rides the Mavic Cosmic Carbones and loves them. I'm afraid of busting up a carbon rim and replacing it for $XXXX (?) when I can replace the set of the CXP33's for under $200.

Tires...gatorskins or 4000's.

I purchase a set of ROL RACE SLR (www.rol.com) and i paired them with Specialized Roubaix Armdillo  - so far bullet proof.  The wheels are strong and spin very nicely.  In my opinion one of the best values out there.  The tires are on their second season and do a great job in dry and wet conditions.  Sacrifice a bit of speed for reliability and endurance but well worth it.

My back wheel needs to be trued up. It has a slight side-to-side wobble, and I feel at times like I'm going to lose control when I ride. Is this something that I should only trust to my LBS to do?

I’m a C-L-Y-D-E-S-D-A-L-E! Many people in the sport know the division is there, but many of them think that it's a 'fat boys division.' So what constitutes a Clydesdale? Why even have this class?
