I try not to brag too much but this is a major milestone for me.

When I started triathlons six years ago I could barely swim. When I went in the water for my first sprint triathlon I wasn't 100% sure that I would make it back out. I don't have those doubts any more.

I am still not fast but I am no longer slow (by triathlon standards--I am still a snail by 'swimmer' standards). When I started I couldn't swim a 100 in under 2:00. Yesterday I did 12 x 100, all of them 1:26 or better on 1:35 send off. It has been a very slow, tedious process but it has been so worth it.

For a guy who 'hated' swimming when I started, I now really enjoy going to the pool and getting in a swim workout.

That is all

Nice job Jason! I'll have my biggest swim yardage this year since starting 4-5 years ago. Will not hit 500K but not too far back. My history with the swim is much like yours. Can't say that I enjoy every workout but over time swim workouts suck less. Being faster is great but becoming more comfortable in race situations is a real game changer.

Jason, That is a lot of yards. How often do you swim and what is your average distance in a workout?

Did you see your swim times drop in races this year?

Well done!

Congrats, thats awesome.

Do you swim with Masters? My volume has jumped a lot since I joined masters, I cant fathom swimming 500k at the YMCA alone.

Either way, props!

Yowza!

Your post made me think to check my yardage and, yep, not even close!  Very impressive, indeed.

Glad your swim has become enjoyable.  Like you, I never swam with any serious intent but have come to really like it this last year or so.  Maybe some day I'll swim even half as much as you!!!  (but I wouldn't count on it)

Matt

Very nice! You've put in a lot of work on the swim and it shows.

I'm a bit behind you for this year. Don't think I'll be able to make up the difference in the next few weeks.

To answer a couple questions:

No, I really did not see a big improvement in race paces. I need to figure out why that is. I had sort of bumped up against a performance ceiling where I have not seen much improvement in pace over the last nine months or so. I am trying to swim train 'differently' to change that.

What I have noticed is how relaxed I am in the water. Really no more terror when going in to the water which is really nice.

The other thing is that I come out of the water very comfortable and ready to hit it hard on the bike. The swim has become a pretty pleasant trip to T1 for me.

About 99% of my swimming is done solo. Probably why I haven't continued to improve like some of you folks that swim masters and are pushed by your lane mates. My life schedule is such that I need to be in the pool at 5 AM or it just won't happen for the day. Around here even the most aggressive masters swim starts at 6:30 and that is what time I need to be at work.

Most of my swims have been in 2,000-3,500 yard chunks. As I approached my IM last year there were a very few 4,500-5,000 yard days but those are the exception. I have swum 5-6 days/week for most of the year, getting done whatever I can from 5-6 AM.

I have been taking some swim lessons from a well respected local coach. I meet with her on Sundays and she makes stroke corrections and sometimes will me do a swim workout. It is helping. If nothing else she has helped me to understand how hard one needs to swim in practice to make gains in racing.

That is amazing! I swam shy of 50k this year in prep for IMLOU and haven't been in a the water since my race (August).

I swam year-round in high school for 4 years- too bad I didn't keep track of my workouts then.
Rough estimate =
52 weeks a year, 4 practices a week = 208 sessions (give or take sometimes I actually made all the practices during the week)
Avg 3k yards each time = 624,000 yards a year (give or take b/c I don't know how many yards we swam each day)

Great progress. Congratulations. It takes a lot of physical and mental strength to do that volume.

I think people underestimate how important swim fitness is. They say "well, I could probably only improve a few minutes on a HIM, I could get more on the bike and run if I focus there. I just want to survive the swim"

They underestimate how much the swim takes out of you if you don't have the fitness and how it impacts your bike and run.

My winter goal is to keep on stepping up the swim, even though I will get little out of it in terms of time. But coming out of the water fresh is what counts most. I am desperately trying to do 10km per week, but it's tough.

Looking forward to redo our group swim next year at Tremblant 70.3 WC. Hopefully the guys can make it out.

Same here for the solo, but I joined a masters team to race with. Did you try that ? Swim meets are kind of cool and a great way to track progress.

I'll be doing a few meets this time around for that reason. Gives some more motivation & focus having a swim specific event coming up.

Congratulations Jason! Both the distance this year and the improvement to your pace for that 12x100 are worth a bit of horn blowing!

Done. Got in 3,000 yards this morning.

I pay a coach to write my training plan (see my sig line). He sends me a weeks worth of training at a time. Most of the swim workouts are repetitive from week to week which makes it easier to remember. He once told me that if you couldn't remember your swim workout for the day then it is too complicated.

To the person who asked about the contradictory statement in my post.... I would say that I have spent way too much time swimming comfortably/slowly in training which has resulted in me swimming slowly in races. I have no problem covering the distance at race time, just not as fast as I would like. My local swim coach has put me through a couple crushing swim workouts the last month or so. At the end of a 2,000 yard set, as I was gasping for breath on the side of the pool (thinking I might puke, or die, or both) she says to me, "now do you understand how hard you need to be swimming in your workouts?"

It was eye-opening. I am trying to incorporate really hard sets in to my swimming now.

Great job Jason.  That takes a lot of consistency to hit that kind of milestone.  And it takes a lot of consistency to build up any type of fitness.

Marc

I totally agree with you a out swim fitness and how much it impacts the rest of your race. Like I mentioned, I haven't gotten much faster in the water but my swim fitness has allowed me to be fresh when I hit the bike.

I'm hoping we can all get together again at MT as well. I'm targetting Muncie as a qualifier. We will see if it happens.

Jason-Steve's workouts are plenty hard for me.

I watched a series of videos early this year from Gerry Rodrigues who I believe is a well known swim coach on the West Coast (Tower 26/Puple Patch). One of the points he made was that every workout should have some really hard swimming in it. He was also an advocate of ditching alot of the popular drills, swimming sets with an ankle band and not using paddles unless you were a sub 20 min mile swimmer. So, swim more and swim hard was the basic tone of it. Does it work? Depends on which day you ask me?

I'll never be mistaken for a real swimmer but I'm not ready to give up on improving.......yet!
