who would you really want to hear give a motivational talk?

My company is about to celebrate it's 25th Anniversary and boss/CEO were talking about "going big" and having events all year. One was having George W. Bush come speak to the executive team, board, etc. about Leadership.

We also host a monthly (and voluntary) bible study group and one of the ideas was on of the Duck Dynasty guys to speak about Faith, Family, and Business.

Any other ideas for an event?

Thoughts that have been tossed out are someone like Peyton, Drew Brees, or a HOF'er like Montana too.

Who would you really want to have your company bring in to speak?

I saw Colin Powell a while back. If leadership is the goal, he is good.  One I'd like to see would be Jimmy Carter. His recent work with Habitat for Humanity and his humanitarian efforts would be pretty interesting. Tony Dungy would be another.

The Dalai Lama

Went to listen to him once. Don't know if you would consider that motivational but you sure come out feeling pretty peaceful and chilled.

Those are all big money people. I suggest you look closer to home to find someone, there will be a wider and stronger connection that way.
Or Plan and host a TED talk so you can have a variety of speakers on a variety of topics.

If money wasn't a concern...

Tony Dungy or Warren Buffett

And if he was still alive, Viktor Frankl, author of Man's Search for Meaning. To meet him would've been an honor!

(I love how you threw in "(and voluntary)" up there. So HR...)

If you want to go with someone from sports, I'd go with a HOF coach over a HOF player. Pat Reilly spoke at a company function at my job several years ago, and he was amazing. Coaches are used to speaking to lots of people and being motivational, players aren't, necessarily. Montana is famously low-key. I met him in person once, and he was very quiet and unassuming. I don't know if I see him whipping up a crowd. If you just want someone to come in and shake hands and take pictures, get whoever people are fans of, but if you actually want someone to talk coherently about leadership and have it be something people can learn from, do your research.

Money really isn't an option (don't want to sound pompous with that, but it really isn't an issue). We're a $1.5B in sales company that makes a product that most people don't ever see but it's necessary for 99% of the US to have. In fact, I'd be willing to be that most of you have our product in your house and office.

I like the Dungy suggestion....and Colin Powell too. My father was able to hear him at a very small event and said that it was one of the best speeches he'd heard.

JFord....you're next on the list to call if everyone backs out.....including our janitorial supervisor. Wait right by the phone....

I think if I could hear anyone it would be Abe Lincoln.

I know that he left the Army under a cloud - but I would love to hear Petraus speak - he was always an interesting person to me, especially after I read an article Forbes (I think) did on him

I would pay to not have to watch a speech from anyone on Ducky Dynasty.

X2 on Colin Powell.  I went to a speech he gave when I was in college in the 90's, it was phenomenal.   Or Ditka.  Yeah, definitely go with the coach.

Without question the top of my list would be Sir Ranulph Fiennes.

http://www.ranulphfiennes.co.uk/

The Dos Equis dude has nothing on Sir Ranulph!
His life story and achievements are quite unbelievable and he's so humble it's annoying.

Expeditions:

  • 1967 - Jostedalsbreen Glacier Expedition
  • 1969 - The Nile Hovercraft Expedition
  • 1970 - 2nd Jostedalsbreen Glacier Expedition
  • 1971 - The Headless Valley Expedition
  • 1976 – 78 - Greenland: Hayes Peninsular Expedition
  • 1979 – 82 - The Transglobe Expedition
  • 1986 – 90 - The Unsupported North Pole (Canadian) Expedition
  • 1990 - The Unsupported North Pole Russian Expedition
  • 1991 - The Discovery of the Lost City of Ubar
  • 1992/1993 -  The Unsupported Antarctic Continent Expedition
  • 2000 - The Arctic Solo Expedition
  • 2003 - Seven marathons in seven days on seven continents (he was 60 years old, had a massive heart attack 3.5 months prior, 3 days in a coma, double bypass surgery...then did the first ever 7x7x7)
  • 2005 and 2008 - Everest Tibet and Everest Nepal summit Attempts
  • 2007 - North Face of the Eiger
  • 2009 - Everest Nepal Summit (Became the first person ever to summit Everest and cross both polar ice caps

ETH: (edited to hijack) if anyone gets chance, read his auto-biography, it's excellent. he was also asked to leave the special forces (SAS) in the UK for blowing up a Film Set - True story /hijack

I went to a screening of a movie about Erik Weihenmayer and he spoke a little and answered questions.  Very inspirational -  He's the first blind person to climb the seven summits (highest points on each continent).

I've heard very good things about Rudy Giuliani as a speaker on leadership.

He's expensive, but should be no big deal for the country's biggest Swizzle stick manufacturer.

Nice!

Of all the suggestions posted here I think Summit is the only one I'd actually walk across the street to hear speak.

Good call!
