I AM 62 YEARS YOUNG AND TRAINING FOR MY 1ST SRPINT MARATHON, ITS EXCITING, EXHASITING, AND FACINATING.
My life is good and great; single, athletically inclined, kids are grown. I finished the Anchorage Mayor's marathon, 5 K 2012; 3rd place in my age category.
What would be your first focus? My first race is local.

4 straight days of at least 4,000 yds in the pool. And still seem to be going well with it.

4000 yds? That would be like 2 hours of swimming for me. You're going to be a fish.

That's awesome! I've been increasing my swim yardage by a lot. I used to swim once a week, usually around 800yds. Since I joined a Masters program earlier this year, I'm well over that. I had my longest workout ever yesterday, did 2,700 yds and felt great. Swimming is a lot more fun when it feels like one is improving constantly.

I think I may finally be over the problem I had with the extensor tendon in my leg. I ran 3.1 miles today after swimming 1600 yards and I had very minimal pain. When I did feel a little twinge of pain I slowed my pace down and it was good for the rest of the run. It took about 2 months but I am finally able to run.

Thanks. Been trying to put myself in lots of situations where I can push, but also swim well. Masters is always whatever is going on there. On my own I'll put in smaller bunches of things to go fast for some 25's on short rest, or some 50's at times. Also, if anyone hasn't seen that video jonnyo posted in TriTalk, do so. It'll help. I already had a fairly good idea of this, but something clicked well at masters tonight. A few 100's early on at 1:11 wasn't that hard. And lots of 50's coming in about :35 on :45 si.

Very nice race, congrats Elaine!

Now I know I have to get a PM this year "Racing with a power meter really, really helped me stay “in the moment”. Speed wasn’t on my main screen. I just had certain #’s to hit, and I hit them. So simple. Not thinking about pace, effort level (am I going to fast? too slow?), or time… awesome."

My HIM is this Sat, weather forecast has changed with increased humidity but cloudy, which I'll take if it stays that way. No way to PR this one because of the bike course elevation changes.  I rode the course 10 days ago and it came to me after 2 hours into the ride with my neck bothering me that my current aerobar setup height (no spacers) that's more than tolerable for Sprints is not what I want to use for the 56 miles.  Found a riser kit on ST and will be raising my aerobars up 10-20mm to help out my neck. I was also lucky enough to find a used full wetsuit on ST for $65 instead of renting one. It had a few small tears that I fixed up with Aquaseal, love that stuff.

Understandable with the spacers. I'm going for minimal comfort/maximum speed with my Oly set-up, because 25 miles isn't THAT long. For a half, I'd need to possibly consider changing it.

Be careful with changes close to race day, but if your set-up has you in pain... then it's a reasonable risk, i think.

$65 wetsuit is AWESOME! get comfortable with it, and swim with it before the race, for sure!

HAVE FUN!!!

I agree on being careful with fiddling on the setup. Going up should be safer than other things though as that tends to be more relaxed. Do make sure the riser setup is solid and will handle bumps and hard maneuvering before the race.

The off-season is the best time to fine tune your skills and prepare yourself for the next season. It is also time for you to gain some strength and get a little rest after a long season of training.

If you develop a strategy for the off-season, you can go into the next season stronger than you ended the past season.
