I was at a conference in New Orleans last weekend and passed this bike on my way to dinner in the French Quarter.  Passed and and had to walk back for a pic.  Bet that guy is glad he used his Ulock!

This scene is repeated literally 100's of times ALL over Chicago (and I'm talking about the affluent North Side, not the South Side where it's almost expected).

Having been to New Orleans, you really can't expect to leave anything with even a modicum of value, and not have it stolen.
I love the city, and I've had an absolute blast when there, but there are so many unsavoury characters usually preying on tourists, and SO much poverty.

Wonder how this guy got home?

Wow-- that's pretty impressive, actually. They even stole the pedals.

I got a crank puller.  That crank and rear shock look tempting.  I wonder if that's still there...

I'm sure it happens everywhere, but visiting Chicago, I heard that thieves where taking the bolts our of signs so they could be pulled out of the sleeves they rest in.  People would chain their bikes up the signs for a quick in and out and the thieves would just pull the sign up and out and through the lock, take the bike, then reset the sign.

I HATE thieves, but they sure can be creative.

What do you do with those parts?  I cannot even sell two lightly used cranksets.

That's exactly why I use a long rubber coated cable through my frame and both carbon wheels on the rack on the back of my Jeep when traveling to races.

The U-lock looked like a zip-tie. Probably was as effective as one.

I can't imagine living in a place where this type of stuff happens regularly.

See it in Philly a lot, but there are also bikes locked to everything from street signs to hand rails, and most of them are unscathed. That's a pretty impressive strip job.

My bike has never seen a lock. I walk to commute, or it goes into the shop with me. My buddy once locked his race bike up at Drexel, ran into get something from his wife, and it was gone in less than 5 minutes.

To be fair...the U-lock did it's job.  They stole everything that the U-lock was not protecting.

The triathlon bike vs. road bike quandary. Before you even ask the road bike vs. tri bike question, you should have a couple sprint triathlons or duathlons under your belt.
