Want to do the Olympic/Intermediate distance in 2014 and then the same event the next year doing the HIM. Which would would you recommend? Same timeframe. Not much cost difference. Travel expense would not be a problem since live in Central Florida.

I progressed from intermediate distance to HIM in a similar fashion. I did Miami Man international distance in 2012, and Ironman 70.3 Miami in 2013, and I am really glad I did so. I've experienced both events, and will keep doing them because I'm just a short drive away, I can now pick one for 2014, knowing exactly what to expect. I've never done Rev3 Venice, but would recommend you do both races, race the olympic/international at one of those events, then do the HIM at the other venue.

You have a good plan, it will give you time to get decent mileage for the HIM, assuming you're new to the sport.

I've got Rev3 Florida in Venice on my schedule for 2014.  I only live 20 minutes away, so no-brainer for me.

I raced the first year of rev3 venice and loved it. We didn't have a swim that year because the water was rough.

I live in Miami but haven't raced Miami Man or Miami 70.3 but I've volunteered at both those races. People really like both so you probably can't go wrong with any of the three.

The only thing that's true almost definitely for all three of these races is prepare to ride in the wind. It was crazy windy the year I did Rev. It seems to always be windy for MiamiMan and Miami 70.3.

I did Miamiman HIM in 2011 and REV3 half in 2012 and 2013. Both races are really well done and you'll have a great time no matter which you chose. I prefer REV3 because I prefer swimming in the gulf over a lake- but the lake in Miamiman is not as gross as most florida lakes! Also, Miamiman is a 2 loop swim. Wind is a bear at both venues- at least the years I did them.

I agree that you probably won't go wrong with either one. I also raced the first year of Rev3 Venice HIM and did Miamiman international this year. Both are very well organized, lots of great swag and the venues are nice. Both have a 2 loop run for the half distance but miamiman has a sort of 2 loop bike while rev3 is a single loop so if that is a factor for you it is something to consider. The lake for Miamiman is really nice as Florida lakes go plus it is spring fed so always wetsuit legal if you like to wear one but generally warm enough to go without if you don't like. Post race food was great for both as well!
And yes, it was super windy at rev3 in 2012 but I think that was just residual from the storm...I am pretty sure that where Miamiman is it is always pretty windy for the bike.

I did Rev3-Venice this year. Overall, the race is uber well organized, very good support on the course and the volunteers are really great. Probably one of the best organized races I have done. The bike course has a lot of turns in it, and some of the run is in hard-pack sand but not much to complain about there. I'll be doing this next year, God willing.
