I found that out this morning. Did my normal 750yd, transitioned to 50yd sprints (2:00 cycle), and I started on my 1000yd and died... at 100yds... I noticed my 50yd times slipping a bit too (1:00, :58, 1:02, 1:05, 1:05) as I was gassed out at about 75 yards.

I was down to about 217 for my race
Now I am back upto 228!
    Im DONE going up!

I had a pretty good workout this weekend and a KICK A$$ workout tonight!
1/2 hour of weights! --All supersets Tris/Bis/Quads supersets - 4X sets twice!
    then
40 Min HiiT cardio on the Elyptical 2 Min of regular kick then 30 seconds of Super Duper kick A!
Then jumped on the mill for a one mile run.
Part of this was because it was pouring out, but it was GREAT!
    Getting back down under 220!
Then set my sights back on 200!

Congrats on getting back in the swing clarky. I have to go to the dentist for some small stuff on Friday but it looks like I am gonna be out of action Friday and prob Sat for sure and maybe even Sunday, ugh hope I can recover by Sunday at least.

I haven't weighed myself in a week, gonna do that today after my swim. I honestly have no idea, was down to a low of 251 which was pretty exciting from where I started (285) in March. However then July 4th weekend hit and I was out having fun every day of it, so decided to take a week away from the scale.

I would LOVE to be in the 240's but we'll see.

Other things, how many of you guys use the indoor trainer, I am not really bored but I am uncomfortable. I THINK the problem is my front tire sits lower than my back (even though I use the wheel holder) and it makes me lean forward and extra pressure on my hands. Anyone else with this problem?

I use a trainer all the time. I have a riser for the front wheel. I don't have any issues with comfort. (My biggest issue is boredom on long rides).

Just curious, have you had a fitting on the bike? Also, is the front wheel riser from the same manufacturer as the trainer? Maybe it's not lifting the wheel high enough?

I use the trainer all the time. I bike indoor more than outdoors.

One manufacturer makes one taller on purpose so your always climbing.

Yea had a bike fit and yea its the right one. I dont know why, prob just me being kinda uncomfortable and not used to riding on the aero bars. My shoulders aren't very flexible so riding in those for only a few min become uncomfortable, guess I might need to get those adjusted because I can't seem to get comfy. Just not sure if its because of how I have it fit or because I am just not used to it.

In other news, still stuck at 252. Bleh. I almost wonder if its possible I am not eating ENOUGH. Today I had approx 2200 calories in, burned 800 on the run and not sure how many in the swim (2000m).

I guess ill try too look up some answers, was really hoping to break into the 240's by end of July, still time though so I will keep at it.

My calories are pretty darn good during the week. Almost all from chicken/fish, protein smoothies, veggies and fruits.

Did 30 miles with the bike group and It was tough, this group is fast and the course is always full of hills. At first I think I was into it because it was something different but now that I know the general route(s) it has kind of lost its appeal because I know where all the super tough areas are and kind of dread them

ESC - how are you tracking calories? Are you using any sort of app or tracking tool? I use MyFitnessPal and fin fit very helpful in tracking both calories in and out. I find that I have to track everything in order for it to work.

Im gonna get some pics up today for sure, especially since I am on a THREE day rest period. BLEH........had minor surgery but no HR elevation for 72 hours or so.

Too make matters worse is my workout on Thursday was kinda crappy as well.........oh well. Take my mini vacation 1 hard week and then a taper week before my next Tri Aug 3

    The Javelin....

My wife and I were talking and she basically gave me the no bike unless a deal just smacks you in the face and lo and behold this one did. Super nice guy that works with MLM nonsense (which I might try out some of their energy drink, he gave me a sample and it was good stuff) and I think he just wanted to get the stuff out of his house.

Ended up getting the Javelin Tri bike, trainer, wetsuit, helmet, Tri top and Tri Bottom.

In other news, I don't realize I am being irrational, but since I can't workout until Monday I am certain I am destined to gain 20 pounds and lose all fitness :|

Full race report to follow later, but I finished the NJ State Sprint today. I ran a 1:36, 3 minutes faster than last year. Had a great day and the whole family raced. Details to follow when the official times and splits are up.

Congratulations to you and the whole family! What an inspiration. I am at the beginning ( day 1) of my journey to a sprint tri. My last was 15 years and 30 lbs ago. So I'm looking for inspiration, motivation and a virtual training group. Thanks for reopening this forum. I hope we get a conversation started.

Jcdyess and Robijohn - HUGE WELCOME!

I'm with Clarkey, wonderful people (on the internet anyways, lol!), very uplifting and it's great to converse and bounce ideas off of those that are on the same journey. I'm still hoping to bump into BTers at races.

I'm splitting my post today... just because, I suppose

Sunday Update (aka: War and Peace):

The scale is evil... evil... EVIL... Or maybe it's because I blew my diet last night and I'm paying for it.... It was mostly protein...

Oh well... The swim: Pretty much all good. Made both Mon and Fri swims. I did burn out on Monday, but I think it was a combination of lack of mental focus, and missing the 3 prior swims. I did pull out the full 2000 on Friday. 750yd, 5x50 sprints (2:00 rotation cuz I'm slow), 1000yd. My sprints were :58, :56, :57, 1:00, 1:05. I expect to slow down at the end since I'm pushing what little speed I have to the limit. I do plan on acquiring the services of a swim coach briefly during the off-season to work on technique. The bike: Total bust! Thursday was a rain-out, and I had the kids to myself on Saturday (Amy worked Fri night). Add in yet another rear flat and just... wow... brought my bike to work today, and am going to do the cotton ball test on the wheel and tire *Fingers Crossed* The run: Not displeased... Tue and Thu runs were both 25:00+ sustained runs. Sat was supposed to bump that to 28:00, but again.. kids! . Also, switching to the mid-strike has almost erased my leg pain. The plan is to at least get my Sat run in tonight since that will give me a rest day in between.

Amy's schedule has gotten weird. She's going to pile on the hours every other week to get long stretches off work. My training will reflect that I think. This week she's works tonight and tomorrow night so... No Mon swim, but that opens up Wed. If I run Tue AM around the block while the kiddos sleep, that opens up Tue night for an extra bike... stuff like that.

Okay... the weight jumped from 255.5 to 258 this morning... We had the bright idea of taking my mother to a casino for her birthday dinner (crab legs night). Unfortunately, I got into the "I'm going to get my money's worth" mentality... yeah... stupid... I was actually down 2lbs before last night. On a lighter note, I had planned to run the Mighty Mite Sprint (Forrest City, AR) yesterday, but rethunk it due to trying to recover from my leg issues. It truns out that my mentor and 2 of his friends ran a mixed relay.... and TORE IT UP. They took home 1st place mixed.

I love race reports. I swear every weekend when I see others doing events I get antsy and wish I was racing! This weekend has sucked as I sit here getting fatter and out of shape. Thats how I feel anyways.

Next week will be the last hard week and then a somewhat taper week and then race week. I think I am really not gonna taper much since its just a sprint

I need to... I'm running 700X32... so I need to see what my options are. Apparently, my fitness isn't being hit too bad. I had a 28:00min sustained run last night and with warm-up, cool-down and that little extra "gotta get back to the house" distance, I managed a 3 miler last night.

Race Report: settle in folks, grab a cup of coffee or your favorite beverage, this could be a long one...

NJ State Triathlon - the largest triathlon in NJ this year and in the top 25 largest in the US.

Saturday, Sprint, 500m swim; 11.5 mile bike; 3.1 mile run
I did the sprint, my 17 year old son (Mitchell) did the sprint, my 14 year old son and wife did the sprint as a relay (Randi swam, Danny biked and ran). Danny has done a full sprint before but NJ State has a history of big swim waves and lots of contact. We felt safer to have Randi swim and let Danny stick to the ground.

Overall there were just under 1200 finisher positions. They taut that there are almost 1500 registered for the sprint, including the relays. I was bib 1206 just to give you an idea.

Prerace - pretty standard. Good night sleep, normal prerace meal. No issues. Arrived at race at 5:45am. Got into transition, got all set up. One nice thing, they had actually numbered all the racks, so I had an exact spot for my bike. No jostling for position on the racks or in transition. As many of you know I race for Ryan's Quest. This is pretty much our "home race". We had about 60 racers over the weekend. So we had time prerace to pose for the obligatory team photo.

Swim - I had lots of time to ponder my swim. I started in wave 13 (M45-49). Mitchell started started in wave 1. Waves were 5 minutes apart. Yes, for you experienced racers that do quick math in your head, the first racers had finished the entire sprint before I even went in the water. i would classify my swim as good. I started at the back and swam up to the start bouys. I timed that bad and was about 20 secs behind the bouys when the horn started. I only had 2 small incidents. At about 100m I swam staraight into someone that has stopped and was just treading water in front of me. Afet a few breast strokes, it was face back in the water and go. At about 200m I got a breath full of boat exhaust (they used some power boats for safety and lifeguards). That led to a mouthful of water as I choked. I popped up coughing. I heard a lifeguard call out as I did that. I gave him a quick wave, said I'm ok, breast stroked 10-15m to catch my breath. Then it was face back in the water and swim to the end. 350m out, a single left turn and straight into shore. Being in the last wave there obviously were no waves starting behind me, so no super fast elite swimmers catching me. I passed quite a few people in the water, including the slower swimmers from previous waves. Total swim 15:32, includes the short run out of the water towards transition. Overall I'm pleased with the swim. I was about 1:40 faster than last year's race.

T1 - very good. I've been practicing cycling without socks. That saved me a lot of time. Quick wipe of the feet, shoes, helmet, sunglasses on and off to the bike mount. It was a long run from my rack to the mount. T1 2:42. much faster than last year. Worst part was seeing people walking around that were finished and I'm just getting out of the water.

Bike - Different course this year and almost 1.5 miles longer than last year. Last year was altered due to construction. Since I'm familair with the old course and we train it often, I know the course well. I did really good on the bike (even though it was lonely). I passed many people and was only passed by 3. I did 37:28 for 18.42 mph. Last year I averaged 18.35 mph. It did take me 4 minutes longer due to the course, but I was faster speed.

T2 - cut about 20 secs off last year - no issues, except again, traffic of people that were done and clearing our and packing up while I'm still racing.

Run - By biggest problem area! I'm still can't find my legs for 1.5 to 2 miles off the bike. I ran/walked for most of the first 1.5 to 2. Then I get faster over the last mile. Last year I did the 5K in 41:47, this year I cut that to 38:22. Still not fast, but faster than last year so I'm not going to beat myself up (too much).

Overall finish 1:36:46. Last year (on a shorter course) was 1:39:55. So I'm very pleased with cutting 3 minutes off my time and posting a PR. I did this race in 2008 for the first time (my first tri) and I did a 2:01:58 and was DFL male.

Just to give some perspective, my finish time was 1:36, but the race clock was 2:38+. It's tough enough racing at the back of the pack. When you don't start until over an hour after the first wave, it makes for a tough run.

I'm still a back of pack racer and don't think I'll ever be fast enough to win something, but thats not why I do this. But, I feel better, I've lost weight, I'm healthier than Ive been in years and I've moved from DFL to about 80 percentile. Not too bad for an old fat guy, lol

    Family update:
Mitchell did well in his 2nd race. He's a varsity swimmer, but basically no training on the bike and run (try to get a 17 yr old on a training program), he did 1:43.

Randi/Danny relay did a 1:48. Randi always swims strong and Danny did great on the bike and run. Again, tough to get him training.

On Sunday - Randi did the Olympic distance aquavelo. She did really well too (although she won't say so). It was a tough 25 mile bike ride in some windy conditions.

Overall - great weekend for us and we all have some new bling to show for it.
