Pre-race routine:

Started the week with an endura lite each day, recovery shake after my 2 short runs. Pre race nothing special, 2 PBJ with a gatorade, cup of coffee.
Event warmup:

None, walked the first 1/4 mile to get myself ready
Run
  • 6h 58m
  • 35 miles
  • 11m 56s  min/mile
Comments:

Hydration was great, I walked every 6 miles for a drink and a gel. Some cramping in my knees, since it was for fun I really didn't train these distances. That was to be expected. With 2 miles to go my knees became a big issue and forced me to walk, I was able to limp it in to get under my goal of 7 hours.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, this was for fun.
Post race
Warm down:

Beer, Food, Repeat

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Distance, and my mind

Event comments:

This is a fun bunch of people, they all provide a lot of support. If your looking to spice up your off season give a winter race a try. They also had other modes of transportation, bike and ski. The bikes look like a lot of fun. Best comment I heard all day, " no one looks down at you for walking".

Age Group: 6/34
Overall: 6/34
Performance: Good
HR was great, no extra running.
Course: Mostly flat railroad grade, I guess <3% slope, few hills with false tops. Snow covered with spots that were soft. Some snowmobile traffic but no issues. The total on my garmin was 36.17 a little longer than last years 35. With the larger starting field the start was moved to a road site park which was closer to Park Falls, they made up the difference by adding a loop on a trail. Real bad footing to start but better as the day went on. This is a open age group field 1st thru 3rd each mode, 35, 75 and 150 mile races.

I can train for half marathons on pavement and on trails, but as soon as I change it up to gravel or loose dirt my knee swells and the pain it causes is unreal. Any ideas why this happens?

I think quite truly for the first time I 'get it'. It's not just about the fitness. It's not just about the great little endorphin rush as you hit 5, 10, 15 miles...its not just the medal at the end.
