Subject: Which paddles for strength training?
Sorry to pose this question. I tried the search function first and could not find my answer.
I am a triathlete swimmer. I only swim open water freestyle. I have no shoulder issues. I am 5ft 10in tall, 165lbs. 63yrs old guy. Where I live, I am lucky enough to be able to swim for miles in shallow clear warm ocean water and stand up anytime I might need to while training. I want to increase my freestyle stroke strength and have used Finis Freestyler paddles in the past and liked them, but I left them in Miami when I moved.
My question is:
What paddles would you suggest I use to build freestyle stroke strength in OW?
Thank you in advance for your constructive advise and opinions

I use these  http://www.amazon.com/Speedo-Contoured-Paddles-Blue-Small/dp/B005HYLQRA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1388925625&sr=8-1&keywords=speedo+paddles

They seem to work pretty well and get good reviews.  I wouldn't go crazy with them until you've worked with them for a while but I swim usually 3x a week and use them every workout but at the max of 800 yards or so.  I would just go easy to start with on the yardage you put on them so you don't mess up a shoulder.  Good luck!

I've used multiple paddles from different brands and the best have been the Strokemaker's. Simple and effecient. Make sure to take off the lower band of tubing that goes around the wrist if you use these are another paddle that has it. http://strokemakers.com/mystore.php

Hands Down the best. Multiple size options. These are the swedish goggles of hand paddles.

This is a dry land workout but I hear it can be beneficial, just throwing it out there. Just 3 times a week, 10 minute workout.

Slightly bigger or same as your hands to start. #3 yellow is decent.

Swim paddles aren't for strength training.

They're for technique training.

right?

From what I've seen, perhaps thinking more along the lines of techinque as the primary benefit and "strength" as secondary.

Have also seen the above recommendations for paddle size before, as in hand size to just a bit bigger. Cam Dye gave some perspective on that in a vid awhile ago, in that this size may not seem as big compared to some paddles that are out there, but it's really a rather substantial increase in the surface area available.

This instantly made me want them.

I use something like this, currently: http://www.swimoutlet.com/product_p/3968.htm ... but I think I want the american flag Strokemakers now...

These are by far my favorite type of paddle. http://techpaddle.com/ Paddle is on your forearm and helps get the feel of the forearm catch/pull instead of the hand. They call it early vertical forearm but it's the same stuff Taormina talks about. I find it stresses my shoulder much less than the hand paddles. Having the paddle closer to the shouder = less torque on eht shoulder.

I was able to buy the Speedo Contoured Swim Paddles locally. Since I was familiar with the Finis Freestyler paddles and had no bad times, I ordered another pair AND a Finis Tempo Trainer Pro. I had some issues getting them shipped overseas, but Sarah at Finis solved all my shipping problems AND gave me a discount.
Thanks to EVERYONE who has taken the time and effort to help me with this paddle question.
