They did just make the change on the swim from boulder bay to boulder beach. Maybe they are anticipating some issues from further level drops.

What are the odds of this being non wetsuit legal? I really want to make sure my first half ironman race is going to be wetsuit legal.

From what I've read, the water temp in October ranges from 70-83 degrees. So I wouldn't say there is ZERO chance, but the chances aren't good. Although, it does seem if there is a spot in a body of water that is 73 degrees, WTC will find it.

Bike elevation is out 4272 feet of elevation gain. Seems like a good course!

I'm sure if I bring my wetsuit it won't be wetsuit legal, but if I bring it it won't be. I was hoping there'd at least be a chance.

That is a lot of elevation gain. Should make for an interesting day and slow run!

With 4,272 ft of elevation gain, what cassette is everyone planning on using for this race?

like you said, RD will find somewhere that is cool enough to measure.

I haven't done the climb from Mead to Henderson, but I have ridden Northshore, and climbed to Boulder City.  My recollection of Northshore is that there aren't a lot of long sustained climbs, more like big rollers.  I'll likely be running my usual 12-30 with a compact

The run isn't pancake flat either

To add:   I see that elevation gain figure is from WTC's site, which is notoriously inaccurate.  Unfortunately it's usually inaccurate on the low side (i.e. list abot 1/3 of the actual Canada elevation).  But hunting and poking around the 'net i get 2500-2700 feet of elevation for the 70.3 Worlds course from mapmyride and other sources, which isn't exactly the same as it started at Lake Las Vegas and not Mead, but has the same big climbs so will be close.  Also don't know what devices are being used to measure elevation (i.e 310 v. 910), long story short not sure what the actual elevation is....

Another bit of advice for those that have not raced there, it will be hot and dry in Vegas and although you will be sweating and losing electrolytes etc, you may not feel it as it will dry pretty quickly in the low humidity.  My plan is to use the uphills to sit up and make sure I am getting enough water and nutrition.  It's deceptive out there.

I totally forgot about this race as it has been the world the last few years. I had been looking for a fall 70.3 and had considered Pumpkinman which is also at Mead but luckily at the end of October instead of the first. I signed up for a marathon the day before Silverman already and my hat is off to you as its going to be hot hot hot for this race. The water temp at worlds in 2012 was 83 degrees.

That was in Lake Las Vegas, in early September.  A month makes a difference, and Lake Mead is cooler.  It will probably still be hot, but hopefully not that hot.  I was there spectating and it was brutal

Wonder if they'll address any possible issues with broken glass?

Here's what looks like an older report on Boulder Beach- http://www.riverlakes.com/boulder_beach.htm

Agreed, I never like to base an elevation off of what their website says as it always seems to be inaccurate. If anybody goes to train on the course and could post their findings that would be great! There is a big difference between 2500 and over 4000, although I did Branson and that was a beast at over 5000 ft of climbing. Ahh!!!! Good thing I live in a hilly part of the world.

Latigo is never anyone's friend

I will be heading out there next month 8/30, and plan to ride the course and maybe do one run loop. Anyone's free to join but I will give a full report.

There's a big chance I may be able to make it since that's a long weekend! Do you know where you're staying? or are you a local? A full report would be very helpful for everyone, thanks!

Where do you train in LA? Are you a member of a tri club? I'm kind of looking around for one since I'm still kind of new to the sport, thanks!

Member of LA Tri but never really do anything with them so not renewing.  I've recently joined Cal Tri.  Free and seems like a great organization, definitely give that website a lok (and it's free to sign up, so.....).

I train down in the south bay area.

Currently have reservations at Hampton Inn a couple miles from finish.  Wanted to stay at green Valley but Hampton was like 1/2 the price.
