Subject: My 17 minutes of fame, thanks to triathlons!

First, this would never happen if not for getting involved in triathlons. Second, I have never been healthier or happier with myself than now and it's because of triathlons. Third, maybe my 17 minutes of fame will help someone want to improve their lifestyle and get off their butts and do something healthy, especially people with health issues like diabetes.

This is an article that will be appearing in my local paper tomorrow. My name was given to the reporter as a newbie to the sport when he contacted our local tri club.

The article: http://www.shreveporttimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060803/ENT/608030356/1005

This will be on the front of the Preview Section that will have the article inside: http://www.shreveporttimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/section?Category=ENT

I casually mentioned this upcoming article to a secretary at work and she told the one contact that she knew at the hospital where we are affiliated with.....the head of publicity! When she asked if she could inform the entire health system that the article was going to be available tomorrow, she asked why I decided to do triathlons and I told her that one of the main reasons was to manage my diabetes better. 5 minutes after we ended our conversation on the phone, she calls me back and asks if I would be willing to be interviewed by the local TV station as a health segment. So, tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. I'll be in an interview and will be on local TV talking about diabetes and exercise! Then late this afternoon I get another phone call from the hospital......it's the media guy who is in charge of the health system's monthly newsletter....and HE wants to do an article on me about triathlons and diabetes.

My head is spinning and all of this is almost too overwhelming. But I keep telling myself that the best thing out of all of this would be getting the word out that anyone can get healthy and fit and have fun doing it and of course if I can influence just one diabetic out there to get out and exercise and do something good for themselves, then this all would be worth it.

Good stuff.

I was in the Times earlier this year for an article about commuting to work by bike.

Do you work at WK or Christus?

Good luck this weekend. I am out of town for work and going to have to miss the race, but it is a great race.

I'm sorry that you'll be missing RCT this year. Sure you don't want to quit your job? :-) I think I do remember that article....is it still in the archives? I'll have to search for it. I work for Christus HomeCare as a physical therapist.

You are a very good model.

So many times we see supposedly role models that are, in fact, no models at all. I think of some movies or music stars that make frontpages with their drinking/consuming/drug excesses.

I don't like to see those kind of people put in frontpages and in the news.

I think you should be in their place.

Good luck and keep on doing what you do.

That's awesome! I really liked the article, it gives the impression that anybody can do triathlons. Best of luck on Sunday!

Of course competing in triathlons is not a cake walk. Responsible triathletes train and anyone who completes a triathlon has to put in the work, otherwise they will likely not finish.

The message I wanted to get across was to do something, focus on something that helps you get fit....whatever it is. For me, it was training and competing in triathlons and the desire to get better with it. For someone else, it might just be finally getting off the couch and taking the dog out for a walk. Whatever they choose, as long as it's towards a more mobile lifestyle, then I think mission accomplished!!!!!

Thanks for the support! I'm anxious to cross that finishline tomorrow!
