I went out for an 18 mile ride last night. I'm not the fastest cyclist in the world (or even in my neighborhood), and all I have is a hybrid bike. I was plateaued for quite a while, averaging a little over 15 mph per ride.

However, last night, something strange happened -- I was MUCH faster! My bike computer was reading 17-18 mph for most of the ride, sometimes surpassing 20 or 22 mph. In areas where I couldn't surpass 12 mph before, I was doing 18 mph easily. I thought it might be due to a tailwind...except that I was heading in EVERY direction (the route I took was a loop...the same loop I've been taking for months...) Climbing hills wasn't even an issue. I managed to beat my previous 18 mile time by over 4 minutes!

So...I don't get it... Any possible reasons for my new found speed last night? (And no, I didn't paint my bike. It's still blue.)

Floyd Landis called, he wants his testosterone patch back.

Some days you're on, some days you're not ...... sounds like a really good on day!

Or, all that hard work is starting to pay off.

Have you had any extra time off the bike lately, ie. taper, that would have allowed your legs to heal and come back fresher and stronger?

Did you recently fill your tires to the proper inflation after weeks of ignoring this issue?

Both of those issues have helped me reach new speeds in the past.

It's either a breakthrough, or some one (either on purpose or otherwise) messed with the calibration on your bike computer.

I'd vote the former.

I'm definitely voting for a breakthrough...especially since my stopwatch also indicated that I was MUCH faster!

Tires are always inflated before each ride...

I'm the only one who touches my bike computer...(I have WONDERFUL roommates!)

I haven't really rested or tapered...

I didn't steal Landis's patch...

Do you think it might have anything to do with the cool front that came through the area? I was training in some rather intense heat and humidity (for Wisconsin), and now we're back to a "normal" August. Any chance my body adapted to training in warmer weather, and now training in this cool stuff is a "breeze"?
