I haven't ever worn any and am curious about them. I've read a lot of conflicting reports on them and was wondering if anyone on here wears them for their long runs and/or tris. Are they worth the expense??

I wear them in run training and for the 2 marathons i've done and for stand along run races, but IMO too much trouble to put on wet or in middle of a transition in a tri. They feel good to me, I like them. No objective data/evidence of any help, but perhaps in recovery- if you like the way they feel, they're worth it. Are they necessary? Up to you.

I have some and wear the occasionally. I honestly don't think I can tell any difference when I wear them....either for workouts or for recovery. After a few runs right after I got them, the only time I wear them for workouts now is if it's cold, but not cold enough for tights.

I don't have socks but a set of calf sleeves. Didn't like the way they feel and use them as arm warmers when its cold. I'd say it is a YMMV sort of item, they are not deadly expensive so not a very expensive experiment.

No scientifically evidence that they work for running WHILE running, some pros wear them while running simply to advertise. However, with recovery evidence has been shown to increase recovery with compression socks after running. Don't need to buy the $40 pair either, Walgreens has quality stuff for cheap.

What I have never known or understood is how much compression is needed to induce the effects that compression is supposed to have. Also for how long, any duration of running needed for compressional wear?

The only time I have worn them during a race was a HM and I actually got a calf cramp the last couple of miles. I can't say it was because of the compression socks, but I have never had that happen before. I do love them, and the thigh sleeves, for after long workouts and also wear the socks on long international flights.

I originally bought some to help with shin splints. They definitely worked to reduce the pain while running. Now that I no longer have shin splints, I use the compression socks after long runs and on colder days to keep my calves warm.

I have to admit that I am a firm believer in both calve sleeves and compression socks. As some others have noted, I prefer to use them for recovery more so than during workouts or races. I will wear them to work following a hard workout and they seem to help eliminate muscle fatigue and soreness.

One benefit that often goes unmentioned is wearing them to travel. I swear by them for air travel and always wear them during long road trips when my legs tighten up over the course of the ride.

I have found good deals on Chainlove.com, the .com, and Active Gear-up.com. You can usually find them for 25-50% off of retail.

Good luck,

Tim

from what I've read- as noted above, there is some evidence that they aide in recovery.  no evidence that they help while running.

Lots of people seem to wear them tho'.

I'm a big fan of compression hose for recovery. My anecdotal experience shows they work well. Buy the drug store compression hose for poor circulation. Cost about $20.00. I'll sleep in the hip length after super long runs and see marked reduction in pain and fatigue (cramps too).

i just bought some in the last 2 months and used them for recovery 3 or 4 times after long weekend runs...definitely can tell a difference and seems to help recovery. I was skeptical at first but i can tell a difference the next day for my next workout.

I'm not sure how helpful they are during a run, but for me they do seem to help if I wear them after a long run for recovery.

I started to wear them last year in a bid to help minimise my shin splints, I cannot say they helped them a lot but when I was racing I noticed my lower legs didn't fatigue transitioning into the run after the bike leg. I tend to wear them for 20 mins after a long run too.

FYI I wear skins!

I wear them on planes. I'll also wear them when I want to scream, "hey look, I'm a triathlete".

I've never worn them while running, but after a long run or a race, they sure feel good on my lower legs after I put them on.

I can't imagine putting them on if you don't shave your legs though....ouch! They are tough to put on when you're tired, and I find it easier to take a shower when I get home and then put them on. Nice clean legs and they go on much easier.
