Sunny
Total Time = 6h 15m 10s
Overall Rank = 101/214
Age Group = 45-49 12 of 25F
Age Group Rank = 1/3
Pre-race routine:

Stretch, shower, tattoos, sunscreen, clothes, vitamins, hydration salts, breakfast, check bike, prepare for swim, check in bag, toilet and hydrating all the time.
Event warmup:

mobilisation exercises and stretching if time, quick swim.
Swim
  • 34m 25s
  • 1900 meters
  • 01m 49s / 100 meters
Comments:

Started on the right hand side of the field so as not to get squashed into the course marking line up the left. Swam most of the way in the clear but following the field as couldn't see buoys until the last minute.
What would you do differently?:

Might be time to invest in some goggles with corrective lenses.
Transition 1
  • 03m 12s
Comments:

No wetsuit so just needed to dry off and put on helmet, sunglasses, socks shoes, number and gloves. Slipped the first time trying to clip in but set off OK. it was up hill so a bit tricky.
What would you do differently?:

Hurry up a bit.
Bike
  • 3h 19m 24s
  • 90 kms
  • 27.08 km/hr
Comments:

I found the cycle challenging but I didn't feel like lots of people were passing me like usual. Eating was hard at first, had a shotz with protein and nearly threw up, then alternated with muesli bars. Drank about 3 iso bottles and 2 water (mostly on head).
What would you do differently?:

Practice eating/taking shotz on the bike.
Transition 2
  • 03m 4s
Comments:

Decided to change into running shorts for run for comfort in the heat. Change over OK and took a leppin at start of run.
What would you do differently?:

would save time if didn't change shorts.
Run
  • 2h 18m 7s
  • 21.1 kms
  • 06m 33s  min/km
Comments:

First lap started to feel full bladder and stopped at toilet for long wee. Second lap stomach felt upset so stopped again at toilet. Took advantage of all the aid stations taking on water, iso, shotz and sponges.
What would you do differently?:

i don't know if I would risk dehydration by not drinking as much on the bike but it would help if I didn't have to have toilet stops. Not sure why stomach upset but it could have been the protein shots as they do have that effect on me. Maybe just stick with leppin and muesli bars.
Post race
Warm down:

Pool, organising bike and packing gear, stretching, long shower and relaxing evening on the beach.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

its still the bike. although I felt much happier on the bike leg I was still much slower than average compared to my swim and run legs.

Event comments:

The race was very well organised with plenty of helpers and the bike mechanics were great. I would enter this race again in future. There were lots of activities for after the race but I didn't attend any as I wanted to spend time with my husband.

I just started doing tris this summer and I have two under my belt, both sprints. Is it reasonable to build up for a Oly in early ‘09, with a HIM in Oct of ‘09

I just had a couple of problems, I could count the number of triathlons I had contested at zero. Secondly, I could count on one hand the number of times I had been swimming in the last 17 years.

Experts agree, doing a “mock,” triathlon on the course you’re racing can aid you in your training; performance and most of all quell some nervous energy.

This half Ironman plan covers many weeks of challenging, but attainable training for someone who has some endurance experience, and ideally some Olympic distance races within the past season.
