New user 327 | Subject: RE: What water temp do you start using accessories? I wouldn't use start using those things until it's below 60. I might double bag my head, and for sure wear ear plugs if it was under 65. I am a bit of a polar bear, as I did my first few tris last year in 60F without a wetsuit. |

Master 3205 ann arbor, michigan | Subject: RE: What water temp do you start using accessories? Tahoe this year was around 62 I believe. I wore a good fitting wetsuit (that did not let in much water at the neck), two standard latex swim caps and booties. I wish I had not worn the booties. I was quite warm and felt great. I have almost zero natural insulation and I pretty much hate cold water. At IMAZ the year before..... the water was about the same temperature but my wetsuit was a little too big and let in water at the neckline for the entire swim. I was so cold by the time I got out that I thought about quitting for the first 20 miles on the bike. my 2 cents |

I'm a total weenie* when it comes to cold water, and was freaking out before an Oly I did this fall as the water temp was 59-60ish. I brought a neoprene cap with me- but after the warm-up, I found it to be no big deal. A well-fitting wetsuit and just a single swim cap was fine for me at that temp.
*I live in Tucson- where it's pretty friggen warm and have totally acclimated. plus, I'm a scrawny 134lbs. |

Expert 945 , Michigan | Subject: RE: What water temp do you start using accessories? Thanks for the replies everyone. My hope is to be out of the water around 2:45. I'll do a practice swim, but it's hard to gauge how I'll feel at 2 and a half hours when my practice swim is only thirty minutes. I think I'll skip the booties, start off with a neo hood, and hand it off to my kayak escort if I get too warm. I'll have the opportunity to drink some warm fluids along the way which should help with the core. What about the potential to frostbite my toes? Is that a concern in 60* water, or does it have to be way colder than that. |

Veteran 2297 Great White North | Subject: RE: What water temp do you start using accessories? neoprene cap under 16C... have swam in 10C without booties... I cut my my wetsuit at the calves a bit so booties would probably gap anyways. Most races dont allow them anyways. Edited by simpsonbo 2014-02-10 8:13 PM |

58 , North Carolina | Subject: RE: What water temp do you start using accessories? I have worn a neoprene cap (with a swim cap over) and ear plugs at 62 degrees, as well as a wetsuit. That water is cold enough to make your body's gasp reflex go off when you stick your face in it, but once you start going, you pretty much forget about the temperature. However, I do recall my hands being cold during that swim....so I guess I didn't completely forget about it. For all the polar bears out there, not sure how you did 60 degree water without a wetsuit....seems like it would have been miserable. Never used booties. If nothing else, wear ear plugs.....cold water hitting your inner ear/ear drum may cause you some vertigo type issues. |

That can happen if you're in the water long enough, even when the water temp is above 70. |

Champion 19812 MA | Subject: RE: What water temp do you start using accessories? I have some Promotion booties that fit well and I have worn in races when it is under 60. What is cold to others may be different than to you. I'd get them and use them if needed. Cold in a long race sort of creeps up on you and it may effect you but you may not know where it is from. For me my feet are usually the coldest of any place so keeping my feet warm is key. I've done IMs where air temps were in 30s-40s at start and my feet were cold even with socks and slippers on the beach and the water warmed them up. It was warmer on the bike but I still put on wool socks and toe covers. I believe when I frist started riding outside I got some degree of frost bite or cold damage so now my toes are much more sensitive to cold. With the hood be careful on the closure as I've gotten wicked bad chaffing from them. Good luck! |

Expert 945 , Michigan | Subject: RE: What water temp do you start using accessories? Lots of you are saying earplugs. I hate earplugs ... I almost can't swim with them. I get vertigo like symptons and lose all sense of form and balance. Tried the neo cap in the pool a few days ago and thankfully I didn't get the vertigo. Have others experienced chaffing with the neo hood? Is it something a little body glide won't fix? |
