Sugar Cravings from Hell...any tips?

Member 560 Utah | Subject: Sugar Cravings from Hell...any tips? I train a ton, I eat pretty healthy, but my one down fall is I am almost positive that I am addicted to sugar. I notice that certain times of day, usually early evening or late afternoon I really start to crave something sweet. I try the "just a little" but have no discipline for that. Anyone have tips for beating the sugar cravings? Is it something that gets better with time as I wean off of it? |

Went cold turkey, check my keto thread for the experience. And trust me, I could eat 6 donuts in a day. Ha, I would have two bananas and 2 peanut butter sandwhiches before 8 a.m. So the fact that I can now walk past any and all carbs with hardly a craving is absolutely amazing. |

I grew up in a family where we could have skipped the main meal and jump to desert immediately and be even happier. To say I was addicted to sugar was an understatement. At 45 years of age, I decided my only solution was to look at it as any other addiction, stop cold turkey. I announced to my family on April 01, 2010 that I would never again eat added sugar. When they stopped laughing and realized I was serious, months had gone by. I will celebrate 4 years sugar free on April 2014. The changes I first noticed in my system, while sugar free, brought me to discover low carbs eating and help me loose 130 lbs. Here is what happened once I went sugar free. Keep in mind that I have four children and my wife and kids still eat plenty of sweets around me. - The first 4-5 days were hell as I went through major withdrawal symptoms. Headaches, nausea, weakness and shaking. - The physical symptoms disappeared in about two weeks. - Sugar was constantly in my mind for about 2-3 months and then it would only bother me when I smelled something sweet. Coming home to my daughter baking her favorite oats / chocolate chips cookies was tough. - The first Christmas with my family was hell. - After 7-8 months I was rarely thinking about sweet, and it was very easy to resist. I also noticed I was not getting sick anymore. My young children bring a new cold home every three weeks, regular stomach flu and the full flu on occasions. I get sick, but the symptoms of a cold are a sore throat for a day, and the full flu will be a day or two of aches and feeling cold. I used to be a week down for a cold and two weeks for the flu. My immune system received a major boost when I gave up sugar. - The other big change happened around two years sugar free. I could no longer eat fruits, too sweet for my taste buds, even Granny Smith apples. The taste would overwhelm my buds and be very unpleasant. I can still tolerate some berries, but only those that are not too sweet. Strawberries and Blueberries are too sweet. At the 2 1/2 year mark, something else happened. The smell of sweet now makes me nauseous. I can't stay in a room when something sweet is cooking, as I turn green very quickly. I had to ask my daughter to move to a different couch when she was eating chocolate covered almonds. Sorry for the long post, but if this info might help someone else escape the sugar addiction, it's worth it. The most incredible thing to me now, is how I could not care less about sugar. That something that ruined a big chunk of my life is so unimportant once you get ride of the addiction. |

Can I pick your brain on what a daily meal plan is for you, do you omit grains as well? How about more "natural" sources like honey or maple syrup? I to was heavily addicted to sugar and have gotten to a much healthier routine and training as well losing 30lbs last few years. My dilemma is SUGAR! Every few weeks I go on a little binge usually lasting a day or two where I totally fold and indulge in candy, donut, latte etc.. I don't feel good after and have great regret but yet this seems to be a pattern for me. It starts with one small piece of sugar acting like a trigger. I am getting stronger (physically and mentally!!) and seeing food as fuel more than pleasure but man I miss me some sugar from time to time |

Atkins, Paleo are all too restrictive to me. I was eating a lot less when I was loosing weight, but now that I'm maintaining I probably consume 2500 calories a day. I consider myself low carbs. Love milk and cheese products, love nuts and meat. I also grow my own huge vegetable garden, so veggies are a big part of my plate. I no longer worry about fat, especially saturated. The more I eat saturated fat, the better my numbers get at my yearly visit to the Doctor. My breakfast is alternated between omelette / bacon, full fat plain yogurt (I add black or raspberries to it) and once a week I'll have 12 grains wheat bread with PB. I am not usually hungry for lunch so nuts, cheese and olives, mostly snacks. Supper is some kind of meat with vegetables or salad. The veggies are loaded with salt and butter. Also got some great recipes from Gourmet girl for low carb lasagna and chicken pot pie. I stick to food as low as possible on the glycemic index. While I was loosing weight, I still ate jam with PB, but made my own using Xylitol. I now find it too sweet. I completely stopped all forms of added sugar, they all trigger the same binge eating reaction. I new the moment I would touch something sweet I would come undone, so I just gave it up. My will power is no greater then the thousands who give up addiction to alcohol and drugs. It's the same principle. I can control grains, so once in a while does not hurt me. Sugar I can't control, so the choice was keep eating cake and stay fat or never touch it again. I accomplished one of my dream and ran a sprint triathlon in 2012 and an Olympic last year. I will keep running one of those every year and try a half Ironman when I turn 55, so no regrets, the cakes are not worth it. |

Mitzi Thanks for the compliment, but it was a such a long and difficult journey that I don't see myself as inspiring. Took me 20 years to figure out my problem, and Gary Taubes to finally give me a fighting chance. I did not know much about triathlons, and the people here were fantastic with their advices and helped me realize a dream of mine. I've learned a lot, over those 20 years, about what works and does not work in weight loss. Hopefully, some of my comments might save someone from wasting as many years as I have. |
