Flatwoods Ramble 10 Mile - Run

Pre-race routine:

Wake at 5:00 and head up to Tampa at 5:30. Bagel and water in the car. Arrived, checked in and tried to figure out clothing. Luckily, I had brought a bunch of different stuff, as being prepared is part of the deal.
Event warmup:

WTF, it was supposed to be in the 50's and it was 35. Warm up was sitting in the van with the heat on and a couple of trips to the nicest bathrooms at a race ever. No using the porta pottie here, the park bathrooms were open. Line

Started well, I was right at 9:45 for the first mile. Kept my pace in mind and I was really happy with where I was. Jumped in front of a young lady as we headed into the single track, in the front of a group of 6-8 of us. Good thing I did, because as we hit the first jeep trail, I had a lead on the whole group. Kept the legs moving, checked my pace and was still happy. Ducked into the next single track piece and kept the pace going. Until it happened. At about 3.5 I hit a root and turned my left ankle. I slowed down but never stopped. Unfortunately, I figured time goals just went out the window. We came out on Jeep trail and I found I was catching the folks in front of me, the ankle wasn't too bad and I might be able to finish this sucker with a bit of a smile. Back onto single track, half done, moving along pretty good. I stopped looking at the watch, since time was only in the back of my mind. Then it happened again at 6.5, but this time was worse. Same ankle twisted when I hit another root wrong and I went down. CRAP!!!! I was gaining on the 2 run/walk girls in front of me and I was really starting to feel good and I took my eyes off the trail just long enough to make a mess of things. I got up and started walking. OUCH! Thought about a DNF, but there was no way. This would be the second race recently to go that way, and It wasn't gong to happen. Started moving quicker, began to run a bit and tried to loosen things up. Kept going and nearly caught the run walk girls at the very end. Last 3 miles sucked, but I finished it and am happy with the fact that I didn't pack it in after the second twist.
What would you do differently?:

Post race
Warm down:

Wander to the van, stripped out of the sweaty stuff, went over and got some food and drink. Found my gloves in the lost and found.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Twisted ankle. Much like bike riders, there are 2 groups of trail runners, those who have gone down and those who will. I changed groups today.

Event comments:

This is one of the best races I do. Real nice feel to it, really nice people. There could be more aid stations, but they let you know that before hand, so I plan accordingly.

OUCH!! Sorry for your double twisted ankle! Like you said, that is one of the dangers of trail running, but it also makes running trails so much more interesting than running roads. Glad you were able to keep such a positive attitude - of course you always have a positive outlook, so I am not surprised.

Bah! A double ankle twist. That's definitely one of the tough parts of trail running.

Those dang roots can be so sneaky!  Hope your ankle injury isn't too severe and you recover quickly.  Congrats on finishing out the race!  35* in Tampa?!  Wow!

Great job Chris, especially for getting up and finishing when it would have been so much easier to set off and DNF.

Youch! I think a DNF would have been perfectly acceptable considering the days events, but keep moving you did! Way to HTFU! Hope it's healing well for you.

Sorry to hear about your ankle(s) Chris.  That sucks.  I don't know what to say about you crazy people who finish a race with an injury like that, but you're tenacious for sure.  Tenacious C;)

I think quite truly for the first time I 'get it'. It's not just about the fitness. It's not just about the great little endorphin rush as you hit 5, 10, 15 miles...its not just the medal at the end.

Yes, the Dual is a little heavier than Cervèlo’s high end counterparts. But…the price is within reach of the masses and it still incorporates all of the design features that make a Cervèlo special.
