Subject: Looking for a video game geek
I need someone who is savy in the world of home video games. I have a 7 year old son who I want to buy a game system, one portable and one multiplayer. Of course, there are the big three Play Station, X-Box, and Nintendo. I heard that Ninetendo is a better bet because the games are better suited for elementary age children.

Now here's where I need help. Do I buy a Gamecube knowing that Ninetendo is going to release the Wii in November? Will I still be able to buy Gamecube games for the next couple of years?

Also, should I buy the Gameboy Advance or the DS?

I've read a lot on the web and I find it confusing. I need a real person's perspective.

Thanks,
Steve

I've forwarded your question on to my little brother who seems to know such things - I'll let you know his thoughts on it.

The Wii looks like a ton of fun but I also own a gamecube. Used to be in videogames a lot. Sold my Xbox and PS2 but kept the gamecube. They are a lot of FUN. I would say check the Wii out but the gamecube is a great deal right now.

Also the DS has become huge. They just released a new version. So either you can get the old version cheap or get the new cool one. For sure go with the DS though.

Nintendo does tend to veer towards the younger demographic, but they produce stuff for all ages. One thing to keep in mind with the Wii is that you will be able to play older Gamecube games on it, so you will have a larger library to choose from than just the stuff coming out with the Wii. There will still be Gamecube games coming out for the foreseeable future, but the number will drop over time as developers switch over to making games for the Wii. From what I understand the Wii is going to be (relatively) inexpensive as far as the 'next-gen' consoles are concerned. Of course all of this is dependent on your budget. You can get a refurbished Gamecube for under $100 where the Wii is expected to debut at around $250.

The Gameboy Advance is rather blah. The DS seems to be where the handheld developers are concentrating their energy as more games come out for that than the GBA.

Hope this helps. I didn't really go over the Playstation or the Xbox since you're buying for a 7-year old. That's not to say there aren't plenty of games for 7 year olds on those platforms, but I think overall Nintendo would be a better fit for a young child.

In my "professional" opinion it would depend on the types of games your son will be playing.  I he is more inclined to kids games like mario brothers, crash bandicoot, etc I would go with the cube.  For sports games I still prefer the PS.  I find it has fewer game glitches and smoother play.  For action games I doubt you will find many gamers disputing the Xbox.  Graphics, selection, etc.  The down side of the Xbox is pricing.  Games are generaly more expensive than the others systems.  Personally I prefer online gaming through my cpu.

For the record my son prefers the PS.  He is a sports junkie but thankfully he spends most of the time playing the real games outside.  He spends about 2 hrs a week playing games in house, but still can not beat dad.

I agree. Besides, he could learn how to program his own games, and you'd save a TON of money. And he'd be started on a career. Lucrative one, too. Never mind the dual usage he'd get.

I agree on the Wii.  The backward compatability makes it the winner.  It should give your son failry good options for a long time and Nintendo does tend to cater to younger audiences more.

Not looking at games offered..... PS3 is looking right now to be THE system to get, once it finally comes out.  Cell based architecture, open source kernel...  Rated at 2 Terraflops. Basicly an off teh shelf super computer.

Once he grows up a little, the BEST games are really PC based, and I'm not talking internet flash games either.
