Say instead of gatorade or fluid or skratch.

We would stop at a gas station on our 50 mile bike rides last summer and I found the soda gave me more of a pick me up then anything else. I was thinking of putting a DR Pepper in my 2nd water bottle for my HiM in May.

Make sure you leave the bottle nipple open otherwise its like shaking up a coke for hrs. I usually just refill w/ coke on rides on the weekend.

If racing, I'm make sure I let it go flat first

I often see riders in the Tour de France have a little can of soda in their food packs.

Recently I bike toured around Cuba. I often bought cold soft drinks, usually 7-up/sprite type. I could never finish it all, so I'd dump the rest in my water bottle. Half soda, half water is really nice actually. It was a good treat.

I know a lot of people drink watered down coke when they get a bottle from the feedzone in bike races.

I usually grab a coke in the middle of a 5+ hour ride.  Usually I get the 20 oz version, drink half, and put the half full bottle in my back jersey pocket to drink later in the ride (while stopped).  Sometimes if I really feel I need it, and it's available, I get the 1 liter version, drink what I can on the spot, and fill one of my water bottles.  I never start a ride with coke in my bottles though.

I keep Coke in my primary bottle sometimes.  During the summer few things are nicer than an ice cold coke.

I don't carry coke on bike; however, I have a can in Transition and I definitely drink some coming out of the water- especially salt water. It settles my stomach, gets the taste out of mouth and gives easy energy. I also drink some coke/soda at aid stations if available. Now, i'm not strapping a 2-liter to my aero bars, but it helps me too.

You don't have to strap a 2 liter, the aid stations are normally plentiful for ironman events on the bike I really only need the one bottle of water on my bike since I can get refilled every 15-20 miles and I was doing skratch but the soda to me just seems to pick me up better. I get powerade at the bike stations but not soda, they do have soda on the run though.

What's the deal with soda? is it just because it's a fast source of sugar?

Sugar, caffeine and taste.  Basically what a x2 caffeine gel is, but it tastes better and easier to get down IMO.  Carbonation can be an issue if you don't flatten it out first and drink too much at once.

Somewhere around HIM distance during the run it ceases being "just soda" and is quite wonderful. I don't drink soda and don't particularly like it but about that point... DAMN it's good

I hadn't trained with Coke, but in my first HIM last summer they had it ice cold at the aid stations on the run and it was simply Nectar of the Gods. Seriously, the best thing ever. I don't train with it, like I said before, but the thought is tempting. When I did the LOTOJA bike ride last fall, I did notice people carrying cans or bottles of it in their jerseys.

I rather go with a Radler.  A German friend turned me onto this last summer, half Sprite and half beer!

Radler's are awesome. I thought that they were half lemonade and half beer, though.

When people think of hydration in the aero position, the first name that comes to mind is the Aerodrink from Profile Design. I was expecting a pretty quick and breezy review of this water bottle.
