Popcorn is about knee high and so far planting it on narrow rows looks good. Watermelons and cantaloupes are running and will thin the hills soon. Still need to work up the ground for purple hull peas and hope to do so soon. Squash bugs and horn worms have shown up and faced an untimely death, but the next generation will soon be here. On the large scale, cotton, soybeans and rice are all up and corn is about knee high, so my leisure time is greatly reduced. Josh, the coop looks great, my chickens would be jealous. Mary, the raised beds look nice, post more picks when they are planted. |

Champion 10154 Alabama | Subject: RE: 2014 Garden Thread Tomatoes, corn, cucumbers, beans, peas, yellow squash, zuchinni, egg plant and okra planted. Some of everthing is up I think. I might need to replant 2 rows of corn as I used different seed on 2 of the 4 rows and the 'old' seed has not come up. Don't know it that is just because it is a different variety or if the seed is no good. I bought this owl to keep guard over my blueberries and it is sitting on the kitchen counter and freaks me out every time I walk into the kitchen and see this beast drinking my Red Bull! If they don't have something to climb, they will flop over onto themselves. I don't know if that inhibits their growth or not, but I imagine they will break from the lack of support. If you have a raised bed a simple solution that I did, nailed a 2x4 onto the bed on either end, stapled some welded wire fence between the bed and the 2x4's. Voila. |

Friend of ours gave us a lot of elephant garlic, so we just dumped it into the ground because we didn't know where to stick it. I also had some onions that I must've missed last year. We planted a bunch of seed onions next to them so you can see the size difference. A full 2 weeks earlier than normal, but wall-o-waters stand at the ready. My husband 'helped' shop, so we have 17 pepper plants, including some grafted expensive "ghost pepper". I've invested in some perennials interspersed for attracting bees all season. I think the marigolds in all of the holes of the "tomato maker" bed. Look like sentinels, standby ready to defend against pests. I need a bee hotel. We went with a "Satern Peach" tree - the fruit look like donuts. I can't wait for blossoms next year! We had 5 inches of rain last week along with hail, so the gardens looks a little rough,but with a little time, it will recover. |

I use the plastics "ultimate tomato cage", and the surround it with a folding three sided wire cage, which I anchor with steel cork screw stakes. One day, when these items I already own break, I will readdress this with a single sturdy system |

I've already been able to eat Garlic, Carrots, Beets, Peas, Onions, Strawberries lettuce, Kale, Cilantro and Raspberries. Here are some pics. 1st is of one of my broccoli's which is producing the biggest head we've managed in 3 years of trying now. 2nd is of my beans, corn, squash, pumpkins, cucumber bed. My Saturn peach tree had little fruits all over when I bought it. I think I overwatered and they all shriveled up. I popped them all off and the tree looks better now. |
