Yesterday was the Azalea Sprint in Wilmington.  I did the race along with my 3 daughters and a SIL.  We all had a ball and the race was well organized - as usual Setup Events does a nice job and sticks to the script.  Weather was absolutely perfect ... clear blue skies and mid 50's to lo 60's temps.

Two things really stood out to me this time:

  • Doing the race with my 3 daughters was a blast and they and I are proud of how they did.  The daughters and I weren't 'hammering' it as we were more intent on having fun than anything, but the SIL raced and did really well in his category.
  •
  • The other thing that really stood out to me was two ladies in the novice category.  These ladies struggled in the pool, even to the point of apologizing at the wall to ones they let pass..  At some point the daughters and I began to cheer these ladies on when they touched the wall, especially when they exited the pool.  Well after we were done, were loaded up and ready to go in the parking lot, we saw these 2 ladies rounding the final turn into the finish.  I wish we'd been able to see these at the finish and congratulate them.  It was such an inspiration to see these ladies' effort, as they were intent on finishing what they started - both had on pink jerseys so not sure if there was a back story, but again ... HUGE kudos to these ladies for their grit.

Congratulations to all of you! Likewise, I enjoyed the race and it is always about having fun! That's the only way I can continue doing anything like this!!!

I heard that they had to re-do the run?  The race started before the course was marked and volunteers were on the course or something?

Great race report!  I love to see families out there.  As an "adult onset swimmer," I know that these novice ladies were working it!

From what I understand, the re do for the run was only for about 10 or so athletes. The athletes at the very front of the race.

So you had to redo the run, Alan?

My first triathlon was at age 56. At first I was just the cameraman at my daughter's first triathlon, then I am doing the races that she has done.

This past spring I realized a few of us were heading in the wrong direction physically. We were getting together for poker games and kids’ birthdays, but that was it.

I'm not quite half way into my IM training. I just raced a sprint and on Monday I woke up and felt like I'd been drugged! Not sore, just incredibly fatigued.
