Been experimenting with it during ultra distances along with a lighter solution of Ironman Perform (lighter solution based on reading Feezone Portables and what TDF riders do) and real solid food such as rice cakes. I'm a heavy sweater so my loss of sodium is fairly substantial.

Seems to work but I am wondering if there are negative consequences. Sprinkling a pinch into the mouth every now and then is surprisingly welcome during exercise even if you wouldn't dream of it at rest.

We ultra runners use straight up salt quite often. I've yet to see an aid station at an ultra not have a large bowl, with cubes of boiled potato to dredge in it. And by dredge I mean exactly that.

Never seen it at an Ironman though. Possibly for IM folks want 'sports specific' items, where an ultra the aid stations feature real food.

problem been..... it s not NaCl that your lacking in races but a mix of sodium, potasium, magnesium etc.....

so you are much better to use electrolythe pills than table salt (NaCl)

This.  Plus, as a heavy sweater (or any kind of sweater), you are mostly losing fluids.  If you are mostly replacing those fluids with a drink that includes electrolytes, then you may not need any additional supplementation beyond that.

I strained by lower back last week. I know that I need to rest in order for it to heal fully, but I am concerned that I am going to lose needed fitness for the race. Will this affect my performance?
