My rear tire is starting to show some wear - 1000 miles or so on it. It is clearly worn, and has a couple of cuts in it - one that looks like it goes right to the fabric, or whatever it's called. So I need to replace the tire.

I'm looking for something lightweight yet durable. Traction isn't really a concern because I'm not that good yet so something really sticky isn't necessary. I currently have Michelins, and they are fine, but they came with the bike so I'm thinking an upgrade would be cheap and easy. Does anyone have any recommendations? Thanks.

If you are looking for a training tire with lots of life, I would recomend the Michelin Carbons. I have put almost 3000 miles on them. I haven't had a flat since I put them on, and they still have plenty of life in them. Also remember to rotate your tires once in a while, that way rear won't be as worn.

A different view on tire rotation from Sheldon Brown:

He says: "putting the less worn front tire on the back wheel, and moving the worn-but-usable rear tire to the front."
I agree, don't do that, but if you are rotating your tires frequently enough (like you should) then one won't be worn more than the other and you won't be in this situation.

This year I put a set of Contential Attack/Force tires on my Tri bike. The attack (700X22 - 190 grams) is desinged for the front and the force (700X23 - 210 grams) is designed for the rear. I have over 1500 miles on them. They have worked well in all kinds of conditions including rain. I have not had a flat and they appear to be wearing well. They are not cheap ($100/set). The description of the specific design of a tire for the front and a different one for therear makes sense. Might want to look into these.

Yes, that's them. Good blend of performance, low rolling resistance, durability and puncture resistance. And they come in FAST colors. Cheaper here:
