Pre-race routine:

Very smooth morning. Vistancia is only a 20 minute drive from home, so we just needed to load the dogs in the car, take the wheels off the bike, and hit the road.
Event warmup:

We had plenty of time before the start, so I got to spend a little time catching up with Tom (who I hadn’t seen since Deuces Wild in 2010) and introducing myself to some of the other members of the West Valley Tri Club, which I recently joined.
Swim
  • 07m 19s
  • 300 yards
  • 02m 26s / 100 yards
Comments:

The seeding system for pool swims never results in a good order, and this was no exception. There ended up being a lot of slower people ahead of me and faster people behind me. I went out too fast trying to stay ahead of the faster people behind me and got winded quickly. I never quite got the rhythm right. Thankfully, it was very short so I didn’t give up a whole lot of time.
What would you do differently?:

I only resumed swim training a few weeks beforehand – still working myself back into swim shape.

Fairly smooth
Bike
  • 47m 23s
  • 16.5 miles
  • 20.89 mile/hr
Comments:

Even though I haven’t ridden outside much since last fall, I have at least trained consistently on the trainer. I just haven’t put in many sessions longer than 90 minutes. I figure that will be adequate for the lengths of races I plan to do this year. I will need to pick things up a little later in the season as the courses get hiller with each event. However, for a relatively flat sprint course, I felt like I was in good shape.

The course was set up pretty well for a good ride. I felt pretty strong throughout, and even saw a few friends who were spectating. I managed to catch up to Tom toward the end of the third loop. We pulled into T2 together.

What would you do differently?:

Performance on the bike was pretty good.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

It wasn’t a very fast transition. Since Tom and I were there at the same time, and we were racked together, we probably weren’t moving with the urgency we should have been. In fact, Tom’s family captured us chatting in a couple of pictures to prove it.
Run
  • 31m 26s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 10m 08s  min/mile
Comments:

Didn’t run as well as I had hoped I would, but was about what I should have expected based on training paces. The trail was a little hilly, which made it challenging for a 5k, and I am sure that slowed me down a bit. HR readings indicate that it was a good effort, though.
What would you do differently?:

Need to train the run more. This should improve as the season progresses.
Post race
Warm down:

Found J and the dogs after being greeted at the finish line by the WVTC members and Tom. I went to transition to get my stuff and told Tom I would see him in a few weeks at Marquee.

Packed the car and headed home

Event comments:

Well run and well attended event, especially for an early season pool swim.

At mile ten I heard a noise like I had gotten paper in my spokes or something. I looked but saw nothing but a few seconds later my rear tire blows out.

Are these races too close together to give me any sort of recovery? Will I be spent and unhappy racing back to back weekends and then again two weeks after that?

When I told my husband that I planned to work toward completing a sprint triathlon, he smiled and was supportive, but a bit disbelieving.

The challenge? The accomplishment? I want to do this because it is an opportunity to live life. The event is an indoor sprint triathlon. I get to experience the challenge on a safer scale.

This plan is designed to make you go faster. 3 workouts per week in each sport, 2 days of strength training and core work. The maximum volume is around 10 hours toward the end of the 12 weeks.

Since your “A” race is your marathon, which you stated in your question, this should be your main focus. I encourage you to taper a bit for the sprint distance triathlon.
