Opening day was today, and it's raining like a mother. Of course my son is standing at my door at 7:30am asking if we're going. I said no, but they're doing a release on Tuesday and I'm going to take the day off. It's also supposed to be sunny and 65. Hopefully we'll be having trout for dinner.

if you catch 'em, post some pictures!

It ALWAYS rains on opening day in PA. That's a fact of life. I think my entire life it rained on opening day. And you're shoulder to shoulder trying to fish.

Hopefully Tuesday will be a charmed day of fishing for you guys.

I totally forgot it was opening day since they made it earlier than it has traditionally been.  Only noticed when working a bike race and there were cars, people and fishing rods everywhere, at least until the rain picked up.

Up north here we have to wait a few more weeks. BTW my son was ice fishing Sat and caught a couple of keeper smallies and a one-inch-from-legal pike. Ice is junk now though.

LB - that is some crazy combat fishin'!  Just say no!  Reminds of some steelie rivers when we lived near Cleveland (one of the best steelhead fisheries in the country - a well kept secret!).  Walk a half mile, though, and **POOF** no one was around!

Brian - I hope you get out with your son soon.  We had some great fishing in the Philly park system when we were at Penn.  One of the funniest memories was the Better Half wading along with her new fly rod when she was 9+ months preggers and HUGE (nerve wracking, as I kept thinking she was going to tumble).  'Bows for breakfast from within the city limits was pretty cool…  Good times!

ScottinPA - Saw the last ice fishers of the season, I suspect, on Walden yesterday.  Pretty dicey…  Congrats to your son on the keepahs!

I'm going to take the kids to the R&GC this weekend for the kids fishing derby - should be a hoot (maybe a cast and blast).

Catch 'em up!

Matt

Well my son caught 4 rainbow trout, I caught two. He was insufferable. It was pretty crowded, but nothing like that photo, or I would have turned around and left. We decided to head to my dad's place afterwards, and didn't keep any fish. Got a lot of weird looks for releasing them.

My dad pulls out this photo of me, around age 13. Gotta love that 70's hair.

you have a trout season?

It is open year round for me in my lake - at least while the trout are biting.

you should try river fishing for salmon in Washington on any given September morning - though Saturday's are usually the worst. Especially the odd numbered years when the Pinks are running. Sometimes I go just to people watch as guys nearly get into fights every other caste and as soon as someone hooks a fish you have 60+ fishermen/women trying to real their lines in as fast as they can before the running salmon catches them all and creates a giant tangle of lines (that is entertaining to watch - in a sadistic sort of way.)

Fishing is one of the most relaxing and enjoyable of my past times - though in all honesty I am horrible at it

There is nothing more exciting that seeing the kids catch fish. So many amazing and funny stories. One time when the kids were 3 and 6 my son almost got pulled into the lake by a fish. He was sliding on the mud and the other one ran and put his arms around him to keep him from going in. It was beyond cute.

Although mine are now at the age where it's competitive, and we have a pool for first fish and biggest fish.

Totally skunked both Saturday and Sunday. Too much rain late last week had the water high and cloudy. On the plus side it was a great day to be in the grat outdoors with friends and family.

The off-season is the best time to fine tune your skills and prepare yourself for the next season. It is also time for you to gain some strength and get a little rest after a long season of training.
