Who What Where When and How of stretching?

I am pretty darn tight in my legs right now.
I have been told in the past not to stretch at all pre run or bike workouts as it could only lead to tearing of un warmed up muscles.

What are your thoughts?
Im feeling I need to stretch, but am unsure:
Before workout
After workout?
off day?
how hefty and deep?

I occasionally do a light stretch post run....but mainly use the foam roller to help w/ tightness. Much better solution.

Always after! Try a Foam roller and dynamic stretching. Once i hit 40 i realized how important stretching was -especially post run. If i don't have time to stretch for at least 20 minutes after, I won't even run.

Yes you are right stretching before a race or training can lengthen the muscles - yet they will still be cold making them more vulnerable to injury. When That is just static stretching though (hold for 30seconds) - Dynamic stretching on the other hand is great to do before as it warms up the muscles and lengthens out e.g. big slow, controlled lunges.

Afterwards you should definitely static stretch, preferably with 1 minute holds - Tight muscles are weak muscles

I hope that clears it up for you - Basically warm up well before hand and stretch out well afterwards

Studies looking at stretching have had mixed results. It is a difficult to examine because stretching is ingrained in the psyche of so many athletes that they are unwilling to participate as controls.
