Subject: HR spikes. Any solutions?
I think my HR monitor may be on the way out. I'm having issues where it will spike a lot...but only on some rides/runs. I mean the thing REALLY spikes. I'm talking it going from 140-150 to 210-220 for upwards of 20 minutes. I did a 2 hour run this weekend and no issues. Went on a 3.75 hour bike ride today and scattered in random intervals, my HR is 200+, even on easy sustained efforts. Normally I see this on some runs where it's cold and I need to sweet a little to get things going but it was ~75 today and I was sweating on the bike for sure.

I see this occasionally. For me, on the bike it's usually caused by my jersey flapping in the wind on days that I'm wearing an under layer it's not an issue.

Could also be the position of band, moisture level (I always dunk the entire strap in the sink before running), or the battery could be on the way out.

I had the "flapping jersey" situation last week and saw my HR monitor spike to 270 bpm. The problem could be a friction/ static type of situation created by a loose piece of clothing. The other thing I discovered after my ride was that the strap had loosened a bit. Nothing extreme, but after I tightened it up, I had no problems.

I had those issues when the battery was getting old.

Can't run outside in the snow? Think again. I flew up the first hill with surprising ease and power. The Yaktrax gripped into the ice like racing spikes on a rubber track. Sweeeeet.

Highly trained athletes can maintain a specific HR longer than a newbie without much creeping; their endurance is greater—thus able to keep pace efficiently and without much additional increase in HR.

My doctor says 140bpm HR is my max, but that feels like a walk in the park... I don't know what to do, how to train, and my motivation is waning. Any suggestions?
