Subject: Yo!
Hey all,
My name is Marc and I am new to BT. I have spent several hours browsing the forum, but have never made any posts. I am scheduled to compete in my first Tri in May (Kansas City Triathlon - Sprint), and I am very excited. Like most newbies I am a little anxious about this and that, but overall I'm super pumped. First off - thanks to everyone for all the info on this site. Lots of my questions have already been addressed - what a relief!

I decided to commit to this triathlon because I used to be very active as a teenager and college student, however over the past decade have found myself more often on the couch than out and about. I am turning 30 a week after the tri, so I figured what better motivation than to try and knock this out before I'm an old man! (ha - I kid).

My goal is simply to finish and have fun - and if any of you are going to be at the KC Tri - look for the rookie trying to keep up on a hybrid!

Cheers -

Marc

Welcome. Way to celebrate a milestone birthday with a triathlon. I have to warn you, that this may change your lifestyle, and you will spend the next decade excessively exercising.

Best of luck in your training.

Hey Marc! Good Luck to you! Do you live in KC? I am a total Noob and am wanting to train for a Tri but can't seem to find anyone in the area to train with. I live in the Northland so, if you know of anyone up in my parts who is willing to train with a total beginner, please send them my way! I trained for HMs by myself but I think for something as involved as a Tri, I'm going to need a partner in crime.

Have a good one!

**UPDATE**
1st Triathlon in the books! I was equal parts anxious and excited on Sunday morning for the Kansas City Triathlon.

SWIM: The water wasn't too bad (reported at 64 degrees), however my form went completely out the window. We had 26 guys in my wave. I went from breathing every 5 strokes to every 2, and occasionally doing a scissor kick while looking forward to make sure I was headed in the right direction! I also stood up too soon and ended up wading through thigh-high water for the last 50 feet or so. That was a horrible idea as it really ate up some leg-energy. I'm sure more open-water training is in my future.

T1: Went pretty smooth. Fairly good jog up the beach to my bike. I didn't wear a wetsuit so didn't have to worry about that. I took my time to make sure I had all the sand off and barely avoided a guy wiping out in front of me while he mounted his bike.

BIKE: I was SLOW. That said, I got lots of "YEAH FLAT-BAR!" cheers, which was nice. When I get some more $ I will spring for a newer bike, as the hybrid just simply couldn't keep up. I trained on a lot of hills and was able to pass a few bikers going up, but when we were going down hills or on flat land, it felt like I wasn't even moving as they flew by.

T2: Good transition. No hiccups.

RUN: Felt a little heavy for the first mile or so, but my legs started working for me and was able to fall into a comfortable pace. This is where I made up most of my ground and was able to pass a few athletes.

I had a "public" goal of just finishing, and "private" goal of finishing in 1:30. Proud to say I crossed the finish line in 1:22:30. Great race, lots of fun, and excited for my next one!
