I got muscle cramps in my feet regularly when I started swimming. Now, I get them on the occasional swim. What's your experience with muscle cramps? You can choose more than one option.

Calf cramps while swimming. Sometimes cramps in the loins while swimming. I know it is more fitness related than anything else. I think I am starting to get a handle on them, but until I do i will just suffer along and use the pull buoy to rest the legs when necessary.

I tried to add "when I try to out perform my current fitness level", but it wouldn't let me add it.

Get calf cramps on the bike when I'm spinning too high cadence and not pushing enough.

Hmmmm. I don't know why. I clicked the "allow other options" box. It must be a site problem.

I had horrifying ones in my calves and arches for years. Turned out my peroneus longus tendon on my left calf(which always cramped first) was stupidly tight due to compensating for when I broke my femur many years ago. My ART practitioner put the pieces together after everything else was ruled out medically and training wise(too much too soon etc.) 2 ART sessions to break up all the adhesions and a change from minimal, zero drop running shoe(which were only aggravating the tendon by putting too much tension on it that it couldnt deal with from compensating weirdly for almost 40 years) to a 6mm drop and extra cushioned. I've been 100% cramp free.

So mine were caused by 'other'

almost always quad cramps on at least part of the run. sometimes they slow me to 8:30ish miles, whereas typically I'd be at 7:30ish miles.

I occasionally get them when I'm racing hard but in each case the cause seemed to be something other than simply overdoing it for my fitness level. One was possibly related to dehydration--conditions were insanely hot/humid (96 with high humidity). In another three cases (HIM, HM after a 29-mile bike leg, and a duathlon with a 62 km bike and 12 km run), it was a cramp in the front of my shin late in the run. Have since figured out that it had to do with the position of my bike cleats--moved them back and it hasn't happened since. The last one was on the run leg of a sprint the week after a long duathlon--I aced the swim and bike, but my legs just didn't want to go for the run--quads, glutes, hamstrings--everything above the knees just shut down!

The only time I predictably cramp in training is when running in cold weather. Usually hamstrings--I have a history of injury there. I try to keep my legs really warm, avoid doing speedwork in the cold, plus wear compression shorts under my warm layer when running in winter (in Oregon, obviously, not here).

Oddly, though, I can never recall my calves cramping in 35 years of endurance sports, during or after swim, bike, run, or tri. Wish the rest of my body were so resilient!
