Subject: Coastal Carolina sprint
Gonna be visiting Myrtle Beach next week so I signed up for the CCU sprint tri, figured it would be a nice workout. Looks like a pretty small event, they don't even appear to have results for prior years posted. Anyone done it? Is it fun?

I have never even heard about the race. I Googled and saw it is the 22nd annual running of the race. I live in the upstate so maybe some of the coastal people might know more about it.

Stung by a jelly fish in a 300 meter pool swim would really suck

Thanks for the replies, sounds like it's a pretty small event, they have a mountain bike category! I wonder if I'll be the only doofus in an aero helmet.

It's a small race. Fun. Mostly locals and college students. A couple of years ago, it was the "test" for one of the classes at Coastal. The bike course is 2 laps with lots of turns. The run is out and back. Usually around 50-60 participants. You will not be the only one in an aero helmet.

It was a fun race, I think maybe 75-80 people total.

For the pool swim they had people "estimate" their 300yd time and started the fastest "estimates" first. That put me as the 16th starter, and some people really overestimated their swimming ability because I caught the guy ahead of me on the second pool length and passed 4 or 5 people overall.

Transition area was set up as you would expect at any tri, no problems.

Bike course was flat with lots of turns, as people have said. I was one of the first bikes on course, and they didn't have anyone directing people at the first U-turn, so I missed it. Probably lost 45 seconds to a minute before I figured out what happened. When I came around for the second lap they had someone holding a big U-turn sign, that would have been welcome earlier!

The run was fast and flat and the weather was perfect.

Overall I thought the race was run nicely and everyone was friendly and helpful. Perfect early season workout, I'll do it again if I'm down there in the future.

that's pretty much the story of every pool swim race ever.  i'm really not sure how some people time themselves to get their estimates.

sounds like it was a good race. post up a formal BT race review, maybe that will get more people to do it in the future.

Thanks for the follow-up. I think an important take away message in these smaller races is to really know the course. They rely on volunteers who sometimes get confused or don't show up in time. Glad to hear you had a good time

When I told my husband that I planned to work toward completing a sprint triathlon, he smiled and was supportive, but a bit disbelieving.

This plan is designed to make you go faster. 3 workouts per week in each sport, 2 days of strength training and core work. The maximum volume is around 10 hours toward the end of the 12 weeks.

I was passing others who were saying, "Good job, 587" (that was my race number). People were cheering me on. These were the nicest people I have ever been around!

If you haven’t done any bricks yet, this isn’t the time to start piling them on, but here are some examples you could do in the lead up to your race.

Since your “A” race is your marathon, which you stated in your question, this should be your main focus. I encourage you to taper a bit for the sprint distance triathlon.

Since I didn't have much time and since it's a super sprint, am I OK just go to at the training relatively hard through Thursday or even Friday?
