Pre-race routine:

Didn't really have a great plan. Hydrated Friday, ate a smoothie in am (half) drank coffee and gatorade on way to venue
Event warmup:

Met Nell for my bib, said hey to some friends/teammates got in about a mile to wu and 4x20' strides, a few drills and calf stretches.

Comments:

Well, this sucked. You know when you just feel great on a run? That was last Sunday doing my race pace intervals, and NOT today. :( Never felt great, but was working my race plan (at a bit slower pace, but not horrible) and my ITB just outside the right knee started barking in mile 9. Then It was screaming, and not to be left out, the left one starting grumping too. I had to walk in mile 12 and stretch it was so bad. I haven't had pain like that since 2012 training for Bayshore. I really didn't have much mental determination before the race (I knew I was underprepared in general for a great race) but I mustered some motivation to run sub 9 in mile 13 and was able to do that. Ugh. Not pretty at all.
What would you do differently?:

Well, I've not been as consistent with my run training this winter and consistency wins. I've got all the excuses in the world, but I should have done my pt exercises and longer runs every week this winter. I know better!
Post race
Warm down:

just got a hug and my medal from Deanna (so needed that hug!), water, banana and cookies. Stretched while trying to get results and waiting for Nell to finish.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

SO much! Primarily lack of solid training. Sick for two days the week before, lack of feeling prepared to kill it or PR.

Event comments:

I love racing here because it's an annual race for seeing lots of friends! This year we had spectacular weather to boot. The big issue was timing. For about a 30' period the marathon and half marathon times got lost. I MAY have place in my AG, but won't know till at least 24 hours later. Running Fit will get it right though, as they have had issues with course length here and corrected times for it. Some race companies don't fix stuff like that *cough 3 Disciplines cough* but Running Fit will. *update...got 3rd AG. At least the really fast chicks took the day off lol*

I just ran the Boston Marathon under nine minute miles, can I run eight minute miles for my half Ironman training runs? Or should I go slower?

I just started doing tris this summer and I have two under my belt, both sprints. Is it reasonable to build up for a Oly in early ‘09, with a HIM in Oct of ‘09

Steady is our walk. Ignoring the pain that is radiating from my feet, I continue to place one foot in front of the other. Again I wonder, “Why am I doing this?”

Having three seasons under my belt I thought I knew what I was doing. That all changed with a few new challenges and a bunch of new friends.

This program should be used for an athlete whose goal is to run a marathon in the 1:30-2:30 range and has a good running base in the past 8-12 weeks.

I will assume you have not run consistently more than 6 miles and have never completed a half-marathon. I believe running your first half-marathon is a big task which requires dedication and work.

My training was taking off. I had never felt stronger. I was making bigger strides than I ever had. I was stronger and faster than I had imagined myself ever being.
