Sunny
Total Time = 45m 32s
Overall Rank = 2/219
Age Group = M30-34
Age Group Rank = 1/7
Pre-race routine:

Loaded up the bike, had breakfast and picked up Jenny. I got body marked and set up my transition spot. Spoke to some familiar faces and planned out my race strategy in my head.
Event warmup:

Rode the course then did some running w/ a few pickups to race pace. Otherwise pretty ho-hum. Lined up on the front and listened to the National Anthem.

By the way this is a reverse sprint, so it should be read in reverse as well ;)
Swim
  • 07m 15s
  • 400 meters
  • 01m 49s / 100 meters
Comments:

I come into the water in 4th with everyone still in the pool. I catch 3rd place before we make it to the end of the first lane, but second place has 25m or so in front of me. I turn on "the heat" (or what I've got left) but it's all trivial as he has dug himself into a hole and has to stand up and catch his breath. I pass him and don't let up my pace until I've got almost a full length (50m) between us. By scouting underwater I can see that I'm too far away from 1st place to catch him, so I slow down a bit and just cruise in to the finish line.
What would you do differently?:

Not much, it was a good swim overall.
Transition 1
  • 00m 41s
Comments:

Transition from Run to Bike

I feel smooth right up until I realize I still have my running shoes on! I waste a good handful of seconds scrambling back to take my shoes off.

Not used to backwards transitions...
What would you do differently?:

Not be an idiot.
Bike
  • 17m 22s
  • 6 miles
  • 20.73 mile/hr
Comments:

I hit the bike and quickly get into my shoes. The first lap is pretty unexciting, I pass a couple of the guys in front of me and on the last steep part of the lap I take a moment to get a drink of water. On lap 2 I am behind a fellow on a short descent over train tracks and have to shoot out way wide when he nearly comes to a complete stop to cross... This is why I use my road bike on multi-lap courses. I'm back to transition fairly quick.

My bike split is uninspiring (for me here) but given I haven't done much riding since last October, I'll take it.
What would you do differently?:

Mainly get back in the habit of riding.
Transition 2
  • 01m 1s
Comments:

Bike to Swim Transition

Fastest T2 (besides two relay teams) of the day.

Hopped off the bike and threw off my helmet. Grabbed my goggles and ran to the pool.
What would you do differently?:

Nada here... good transition.
Run
  • 19m 15s
  • 3 miles
  • 06m 25s  min/mile
Comments:

The horn sounds and we're off. My primary goal was not to try to run with the first group of guys, but to keep them in sight. For the first two miles everything goes perfectly, but as we crawl up some of the steeper sections towards transition I lose sight of some of the faster guys. Not exactly knowing what to expect I decided not to push the pace and race my own race.
What would you do differently?:

Probably push a little harder. I didn't want to blow up first thing, but I had the extra to go harder.
Post race
Warm down:

Sucked Air for a few minutes, got a cold coke and some water and relaxed watching the rest of the finishers, hanging with the Family and Jenny ;)

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Mostly my more lax amount of riding over the winter.

Event comments:

Race Day Events is always awesome!

Congrats on a great race Chris! Did you get all the way out of transition before realizing you still had your running shoes on? Last year at Anchor Splash (also reverse) I was out of transition and stepped onto my clipped in bike shoe with my running shoes still on. I had to lay the bike down, run back to transition, throw off the shoes and try again. This year I remembered to take my shoes off, but apparently forgot how to mount the bike with shoes clipped in, fell, tried again but had the pedals in the wrong place by then and couldn't get going, so had to completely stop, unclip shoes, put shoes on, step over, then try to get going. Yikes. Bad news is I practiced on both Friday and Saturday. Still had the 19th fastest bike and finished 3rd in my age group.

Great race!
